CHARLESTON, Decembers.-Within the last two Weeks, there has been a marked advance in the market price of the various State securities of Sonth Carolina-bills receivable hav? ing risen from 70 to 90, old bonds from 57 to 65, and new bonds from 52 to 57. Charleston city stock has also advanced about 10 per cent. These facts are regarded as indica? tions of increased pnblic confidence and the beginning of brighter times at the Sontb. RICHMOND, December 3.-lu the United States Circuit Court, Chief Justice Chase on the bench, argu? ment was oommonced on a motion to Snash the indictments ogainst Jeff. ?avis. Robert Ould, counsel for Davis, argued that the fourteenth amendment punished Davis by dis? franchisement, and this punishment was chosen by the voice of the Ame? rican people, as a merciful substitute for the penalties of death and con? fiscation, contained in the Constitu? tion. That the punishment of Davis commenced upon the date of the adoption of the fourteenth article, and he cannot now be punished in any other way. That the latest ex? pression of the will of the people, in their Constitution, is the law, and it repeals all former provisions made for those who engaged in rebellion. That the fourteenth article is that latest expression-intended expressly for, and covering coses of all engaged in tho lato rebellion, and that no man can be punished twice for the same offence. R. H. Daua, counsel for the United States, said Ould's propo? sition was, in tho nature of things, entirely new, and was unexpected to the Government counsel; and he ex? pected, alBO, to the Court. Thc Chief Justice said the argument of thc counsel was not unexpected to the Court-it having supposed, after tho announcement that the motion to quash was based ou the fourteenth article, that this line of argument would be pursued. Time was given the Government counsel to confer, and the court took a recess at noon. 3 P.|M.-After the re-assembling of tho Court, Gov. H. H. W?lls aud District Attorney Beach for the Go? vernment, replied, contending that the fourteenth amendment merely created a disability and not a penalty, which is tho subject of judicial sen? tence, and was not inconsistent with the act against treason. The amend? ment was permanent and prospec? tive, and could not reasonably be construed as intended to repeal exist? ing punishments for past and future treasons. The Court then adjourned. When tho pure medicinal restorative, now so widely known as WOLFE'S SCHIE? DAM SCHNAPP8, was iutroduced into the world, under the endorsement o? -1,000 loading members of tho medical profes? sion, some twenty years ago, its proprie? tor was well aware that it could not wholly escape the penalty attached to all new and useful preparations. Ho, therefore, en? deavored to invest it with the strongest possiblo safeguard against counterfeiters, and to render all attempts to pirate it dif? ficult and dangerous. It wiis submitted to distinguished chemists for analysis, and pronounced by them tho purest spirit ever manufactured. Its purity and properties having been thus ascertained, samples of tho article were forwarded to 10,000 phjti oians, including all the leading practition? ers in tho United States, for purposes of experiment. A circular, requesting a trial of tho preparation and a report of tho re? sult, accompanied each specimen. -1,000 of the most eminent medical men in the Union promptly responded. Their opiuions of tho article were unanimously favorable. Such a preparation, they said, had long been wanted by tho profession, as no reli anco could bo placed on the ordinary liquors of commerce; all of which were moro or loss adulterated, and, therefore, unlit for medical purposes. Tho peculiar excellence and strength of tho oil of juni? per, which formod one of the principal in? gredients of tho Schnapps, togothor with an unalloyed character of tho alcoholic element, give it, in tho estimation of tho faculty, a marked superiority over every other diffusive stimulant as a diuretic, tonic and restorative. These satisfactory credentials from pro? fessional men of tho highest rank wero published in a condensed form, and en? closed with each bottle of tho Schnapps, as ono of tho guarantees of its genuine? ness. Other precautions against fraud were also adopted; a patont was obtained for tho article, the label was copyrighted, ti fae simile of tho proprietor's autograph signature was attached to each label and cover, his name and that of tho prepara? tion wore embossed on tho bottles, and the corks wore sealed with his private seal. No article had ever been sold in this coun? try under tho name of Schnapps prior to tho introduction of Wolfe's Schiedam Aro? matic Schnapps, in 1851; and thc label was deposited, as his trade mark, in tho United States District Court for the Southern Dis? trict of New York during that year. It might bo supposed, by persons unac? quainted with tho daring character of tho pirates who prey upon tho reputation of honorablo morchants, by vending delete? rious trash under their name, that tho protections so carofully thrown around these Schnapps would have precluded tho introductions and salo of counterfeits. They soem, howovor, only to havo stimn laleu tho i ?ipaciiy ot impostors. Tho trade mark of the proprietor has beenalolen; tho endorsement which his Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps alono received from the medical profession has been claimed by mendacious humbugs: his labols an ' bottles bavo boon imitated, Iiis advertise I monte paraphrased, his cucuiars copiod, | and, worse than all, dishonorablo retailers, after dispoaing of tho gonuino contents of his bottles, havo tilled them up with com? mon gin, tho most deleterious of all liquors, and thus mado his name and brand a cover for poison. Tho public, tho medical profession and tho sick, for whom the Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps is prescribed as a remedy, aro equally interested with tho propriot<v in tho det cot inn and suppression of tlicso ?.e farious practices. Tho genuino article, manufactured at the establishment of tho undersigned, in Schiedam, Holland, is dis? tilled from a barley of tho finest quality, and dav "?red with an essential extract of th? berry cf tho Italian jonipor, of mit* } quailed purity. 4Br * process unknown tn J th9 pr?paration ol^uy v other liquor, is U , freed from every acrimonious and corro-| sive element. Complainte bav? been received from the leading physicians and families lb tho Southern States, of the aale of cheap imi? tation? of the Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps in thoee markets; and travelers, who are in the habit of using it aa an anti? dote to the baneful influence of unwhole? some river water, teatify that cheap giu, pat up in Schiedam bottles, ia frequently palmed off upon the unwary. The agents of the undersigned have been requested to institute inquirios on tho subject, and to forward to him the names of auch parties aa they may ascertain to bo engaged in the atrocious syatem of deception. In conclusion, thc undersigned would say that ho haa produced, from under the hands of the moat diatinguished men of science in America, proofs unanawcrablo of tho purity and medicinal excellence of the Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps; that he has expended many thousand dollars ia surrounding it with guarantees and sato- j guards, which ho dosigoed tdiould protect the public and himself against fraudulent imitations; that he has shown it to bo thc only liquor iu tho world that can be uni? formly deponded upon a? unadulterated; that ho has challenged investigation, analysis, comparison, and experiment in all its forms; and from every ordeal thc preparation which bears his name, seal and trado marl;, has come off triumphant. He, therefore, feela it a duty ho owes to his fellow-citizens generally, to tho medical profession and the sick, to denounce and expose the Charlatans who counterfeit tbeao evidences of identity, and ho calls upen tho presa and the public to uid him in his efforts to remedy BO great an evil. Tho following letters and certificates, from the leadiug physicians and chemists of this city, will provo to thc reader that all goods sold by the undersigned aro all thov aro represented to be.
