HORRIBLE MURDER IN PHILADEL?
PHIA.-The Philadelphia papers of
Monday give the following particu?
lars of a most horrible murder which
iras committed in that oity the previ?
ous day, a brief account of which was
telegraphed :
A terrible tragedy was enacted last
evening at the North-east corner of
Tenth and Pine-streets. An old lady
named Mrs. Hill was found about 9
o'clock lying dead in the yard of the
premises. The body was shockingly
mutilated about the head, giving evi?
dence of foul play, and was besides
bruised, aa-though it had fallen some
distance on to the ground. The
corpse was discovered by the servant
girl on returning from church, and as
she was abont making the house se?
cure for the night. The girl giving
the alarm, Mrs. Hill's son-in-law, a
man named George Twitchell, came
down stairs iu an unconcerned way,
and expressing no particular surprise
at seeing the venerable lady's dead
body, assisted tho servant in carrying
it into the house. Nows of the terri?
ble- affair hod, in the meantime,
spread through the neighborhood,
and a highly excited orowd '. gathered
around the house. Police officers
were soon on the ground, and
Twitohell and his wife were arrested
on suspicion of the crime. Mrs.
Twitohell is confined in the house,
but Twitohell was taken to the Sta?
tion House, corner Fifteenth and Lo?
cust, where he now remains.
The room where the supposed mur?
der was committed is magnificently
furnished, and the entire premises
show all the evidences of refinement
and wealth. A sofa under the win?
dow is covered with blood, and the
act was evidently committed upon it.
From the sofa trails of blood readied
into the next room, and the window of
the room is marked by bloody finger
prints, showing where the victim was
precipitated into the court below.
Alongside of the sofa, in the inner
room, W?3 found a poker covered
with blood and hair.
The prisoner, Twitohell, will give
no account of the affair further than
that the lady committed suicide by
jumping out of the window. All the
evidence is against this view of tho
case, however, abd the crowds which
visited the premises last evening were
of the unanimous opinion that a vile
murder had been committed. Mrs.
Hill was very wealthy, and it is sup?
posed that the murderer or murder?
ers hoped by this unholy means to
obtain possession of her money. The
social standing of the parties gives an
especial interest to tho caso which, in
the horrid distinctness of its details,
has hardly, if ever, hod a parallel in

TREASURY ESTIKATES.-"Data," of
the Baltimore Sun, in his despatch to
that journal from Washington, says:
" The estimates of expenditures of
the Secretary of the Treasury for tho
next fiscal year, ending June 30,1870,
will be'from forty to fifi - millions
less than they were for tho present
fiscal year, unless the indian war
should beoome more formidable than
is indicated at present. Last year
the estimates for the expenses of the
Navy Department were placed at
thirty-five millions, but for the next
year it is understood that they will
not go much beyond twenty millions.
The Secretary's estimates for the
receipts and expeulitures for tho
coming fiscal year are based princi?
pally on the general average of those
for the past nine months."
Tho Clevolond Plaindealer says that
"Gen. Grant has written to Gen.
Slocum, a Democratic member of
Oongross, recently elected in New
York, intimating that 'there will not
probably be anything in the next Ad?
ministration whioh a moderate De?
mocrat may not support.' "
ELECTION JUIOTS IN ENGLAND.-It
seems that the elections in Great Bri?
tain have been attended with a great
deal cf disorder ; but thai is no new
thing, and wo have no evidence, so
far, that the riots and tho fighting
have been worse than a hundred times
before. There has been unusual ex
[ oitcment about this contest, and a
good many high-and-dry old tories,
I who believed that the reform bill
would enthrone tho mob, and whelm
everything respectable in a flood of
dirty democracy, expected a general
letting looso of tho disorderly classes
of society. A good many hoads have
been cracked and windows broken, a
scoro or so of shops and houses in
different parts of the kingdom demo?
lished, and one or two lives lost ; but
much worse things were done in times
past, when there was no household
suffrage. Elections, in fact, havo.al?
ways been conducted with more quiet
and decorum in the United States,
where the suffrage is nearly universal,
than in Great Britain, where it has
been greatly restricted, and the nearer
England approaches to our system
of popular government, tho more
smoothly she will find the exercise of
the suffrage to work.
ARREST OF A WHITE MAN AND SIX
NEGROES.-On Wednesday last, D.
A. Fosket, living at tho "old Lan
drum place," midway between* this
and Aiken, was arrested, brought to
this place and lodged in jail. At the
same time and place, were arrested
six negroes, who aro also in our jail.
Tho charges against Fosket, so far as
we can learn, aro that he keeps
around him a gang of negroes whom
ho has armed, and whom he con?
stantly drills. That he has incited
these negroes to kill certain of his
neighbors. That the houses of cer?
tain of his neighbors have been vio?
lently assaulted at night, and that
these neighbors are in daily fear of
their lives. That he has offered a
white man of good character, who is
willing to swear to the fact, $500 to
kill a certain well-known citizen of
this place. And that he is a mis?
chievous man, and foments strife and
discord generally in the section in
which he lives. The six negroes aro
of the said gang. Fosket bas not
given bail. These arrests were made
by Deputy State Constable Kennedy,
nssisted by his special deputies, D.
W. Christain and Noah Corley.
\Edgefiehl Advertiser.
The Galveston (Texas) Civilian, of
the -Itli instant, makes the following
statement: "Although it may bo a
mattor of surprise to our readers, it
is nevertheless true that Messrs.
Heidenhemer <fc Co., of this city,
have just received a consignment of
coolies direct from China. They
were shipped direct to this port under
ordinary bills of lading, and are re?
garded by tho firm as simple mer?
chandize, to be sold for freight aiid
charges. Two-thirds of these per?
sons aro females, one of whom is said
to be very beautiful. They are to be
disposed of at auction. In Califor?
nia and Mexico coolies are quite com?
mon, but this invoice, wo believe, is
the first ever received in Texas.
What tho result will be, remains to
bo seen."

are to the 15th of October. Mr.
Burlingame is still sharply criticised
by tho English press in China. A
European steamer had been fired
upon by Chinese gun-boats for not
dipping hor flag as they passed. Tho

accede to the British demands in re?

JAPAN.-Advices from Yokohama
are to tho 28th of October. The
Mikado had been crowned Emperor.
Jeddo still remained closed, but was
ready for opening to foreign trade as
soon as tho conference between tho
authorities and tho foreign consuls
came to an end. Nagati and Hako
dadi had been seized ny tho South?
ern troops. Tho foreign citizens
escaped in safety to Sbaughae.
COTTON BURNT.-We regret to learn
that tho cotton-honso of Mr. Samuel
L. Reid, near Fishing Creek Churoh,
together with eight or ton bales of
cotton and fifty bushels of wheat, was
destroyed by fire on Saturday night
last. The burning is supposed to
have been the work of an incendiary.
