A sharp Frenchman was recently
arrested for a serious crimo and taken
to the Charleroi prison. His wife |
accompanied him. The moment the
police retired he fell at his wife's
feet, sobbed bitterly-, told her ho
knew she was innocent, it was all a
mistake, then turning to tho jailor,
said: "Let mo out, I have no time to
loss, I am going at once to the judge
to explain the mistake to him, and
get an order for my wifo's libera?
tion." He was let out, but naturally
didn't como back.
Medicine Wolf, a Cheyenne chief,
who was killed a few weeks ago in
Western Kansas, had forty scalps
which ho wore for a necklace. All
vere those of white people-somo j
taken from gray-headed men and wo?
men, and some from very small chil?
dren. A piece of the chief's own
scalp is to be made into a vest cbaiu
for one of the party who killed him.
Seven murdorcHses are in jail in
Paris, among whom nate four widows
who killed their" husbands; a young |
girl, Hubertine Xavierre, not yet fif?
teen, who strangled her baby; a pro?
stitute who poisoned another frail
?istor in a fit of jealousy; and a dress?
maker who killed ono of tho young j
girls in her shop, during a violent]
altercation.
The ex-Quo >u of Spain has caused

with her into exile the sum of 28,000,
000 reals belonging to tho Spanish
treasury. She farther says that the

The number of children registered
as attendants at the public schools in
Now York oity is 230,000, the daily
averago attendance being about 100,
000. There are nearly 2,000 female |
publie school teachers in the city,
and upward of 100,000 in the coun?
try. The average attendance at tho
evening schools is 20,000.
An Irishman in Now York was re?
quired to produce his certificate of
citizenship. He retired in anger, and
after a time re-appeared,bearing upon
his buck a house door, on which was
pasted, all too securely, the required
paper. This he set down before the
astonished Judge, with tho remark,
"Au' will that pluze yer?"
The Chinese at Yangebow recently
became enraged at tho idea that the
Protestant missionaries boiled up
children into soup, and proceeded to
mob thom iu a truly loyal manner.
They have arrested a man in Bos?
ton simply for opening a jewelry
store on Washington street. He did
it with a jimmy.
