Dead Letter? Their Post Mortem
Examination.
Of all tho efficient work done at
Washington, none is regarded with
more interest by the transient visitor
than the Dead Letter Office. Here
sit some fifteen or twenty gentlemen
-for it is a fact disgraceful to huma?
nity that females cannot bo employed,
so many obscene letters poison the
mails-continually engaged in open?
ing the four or five millions of letters
that annually find their way there.
More than fifteen thousand letters
aro daily emptied on their desks ask?
ing to be opened. When a letter is
found to have valuable contents, thoso
contents are endorsed upon it, and
the letter returned to tho envelope.
A record is made of all suob letters,
and they aro at once returned to their
writer, without return postage. So
perfeot are the arrangements, that it
is hardly possible that a valuable dead
letter, which has once reached tho
office, should fail of revisiting the
writer, if it is in the power of tho
Department to discover him. During
the past year, 85,000 letters, inclos?
ing ?124,234, were received nt this
office, and nearly 29,000 of them,
containing $180,620, wore restored to
their owners. But besides these
money letters, there were 21,000 dead
letter.?, containing bills of exchange
and other valuable matter, appraised
at over $5,000,000; over 49,000, con?
taining photographs, jewelry, etc. ;
and 97,000, containing stamps and
artioles of small value; nearly all of
them were returned to the original
writers, and the reason why any of
these letters fail of being returned is
not the fault of the Department, but
of the writers, who either send au
unsigned letter, or who will subscribe
herself "your loving Susie," or "your
affectionate Adie;" and, as the Go?
vernment knows no first names, all
such letters aro consigned to the
cbopping-box and then to the paper
mill, to appear as white paper.
Since writing thus far, I have once
more visited tho Dead Lotter Office,
a visit that always gives pleasure and
gratifies curiosity. Here I saw clerks
taking about $500 a day ont of the
letters so profusely scattered over
their desks, and among the various
articles recently taken out of their
envelopes, I noticed tho following:
Slippers, valentines, a duck's head,
thermometers, false pistols, mittens,
fern leaves, false hair, laces, paper
collars, eppaulets, horns, pipep,watch
oases, hoops, dolls (ono of them two
feet high-it must have required a
monster envelope), butterflies, mats,
medicines, silver goblets of full size,
ear-rings, butter-knives, spoons, gold
and silver watches (very little gold or
silver about them, however.) shells,
purses, Ronp, sugar, tea, coffee, bows
and arrows, books, pictures, a box of
Bogare, a bottle of Jamaica ginger,
a squirrel's tail,prisms, combs, boxes,
combs, &c.

enltivated the cotton plant centuries
before this country was heard of, and
who fed silk worms before King Solo?
mon built his throne, have 50,000
square miles around Shanghai which
are called the Qarden of China, and
which have been tilled by countless
generations. .This area is as large as
New York and Pennsylvania com?
bined, and is all meadow-land, raised
but a few feet above the river-lakes,
rivers,canals-a complete not-work of
water communication ; the land under
the highest tilth; threo crops a year
harvested; population so dense that
wherever yon look you seo mon and
women, in blue pants and blouse, so
numerous that yon fancy some fair or
muster is coming off and n\\ hands
have turned out for a holiday.
GOOD FEELING AND GOOD SENSE.
A gratifying proof of returning rea?
son, aa a result of the Republican
triumph, is reported by our Charles?
ton correspondent. Tho Governor
of South Carolina, it appears, has
been waited upon by Wade Hamp?
ton and other prominent Democrats
of the State, who announce their ac?
ceptance of tho .situation and their
purposo hereafter to confine opposi?
tion within peaceable and lawful
limits. Thoy recognize the election
of Grant as a verdict of tho nation
in support of reconstruction; and
under this impression they proposo
to sustain the new Government, to
uphold its acts, and to rely upon the
ballot-box for effecting whatever
changes they deem desirable in tho
local government. Fortified with
this evidence of growing harmony,
Gov. Scott is coming to New York to
seek aid for an enterprise esseutial to
the success of tho railway system of
the State, and in other respects to
invito tho co-operation of Northern
capital for tho development of its re?
sources.
This is tho beginning of tho peaco
which all now hope for. Tho step
taken by tho South Caroliua Demo?
crats is eminently prudent, and can?
not bo too soon imitated by tho same
class in other States. Foiled in their
efforts to overturn reconstruction,
the best thing possible is to accept it,
and to inako tho best of it under tho
law. If it require amendment, tho
people of euch Stute have tho power
of adapting it to their wishes; nuil
this should be enough. Tho formal
declaration that it is now regarded ns
enough for South Carolina, will
doubtless exercise a wide influeuco
throughout tho South, and we may
expect to witness au extension of the
movement thus happily begun. There
is nothing to hinder it but passion
and prejudice, and these must gradu?
ally yield to a senso of the folly of
opposing the national will.
Already, therefore, the beneficial
influence of Grant's election makes
itself manifest When it .shall bo
fully and frankly acknowledged, ns in
South Carolina, the South may con?
fidently seek from tho North tho ma?
terial succor which will bast?n tho
return of prosperity.

GEN. HINDMAN'S MUHDER PLANNED |
DY RADICALS IN LITTLE ROCK.-Tho
country has not yet recovered from
tho thrill of horror caused by tho an?
nouncement of tho murder in Hele?
na, Arkansas, of Gen. T. C. Hind
man, who, while in tho midst of his |
family, was shot down by some un?
known assassin.
Geu. Hindman had been promi?
nent in tho ranks of the opponents
of radicalism in Arkansas, aud his
terrible blows won for him alike the
admiration of his respectable fellow
citizens aud the eternal enmity of the
radicals. When ho fell by tho assas?
sin's hand, it was evident that he had
died a martyr to tho cause in which
ho so earnestly and powerfully labor?
ed. But in order to lull suspicion,
tho radicals became foremost among
those who denounced his death. In
public meeting and their newspapers
they fiorcely called for the punish?
ment of his murderer. Tho pretence I
was too bare, and no one was de?
ceived by it. .
Tho past few days have produced
revelations which firmly fix lue crimo
of this horrid murder upon not an
individual member of the radical
party in Arkansas, but the loaders of
that foul organization themselves.
Tho efforts of detectives havo deve?
loped, beyond the possibility of a |
doubt, that tho assassination of Gen.
Hindman was planned in Little
Rock by leading radicals, and execut?
ed by their orders. The assassin was
a white man who was paid 8800 for
Ibo transaction. He left Little Rock
stealthily, approached Helena, and
was taken oharge of there by radicals
in tho plot, who furnished all needed
information about Gen. Hindman,
the. most practical method of commit?
ting tho murder, eto. As soon as the
doed was committed, tho assassin re?
turned to Little Rock, und thence
went to Mexico via Texas. Governor
Clayton's reward for the murderer
did not appear until suffioieut time
had elapsed for tho assassin to got
beyond the reach of justice. This is
the radicalism which desires "peace."

working on a farm all summer for
fifty cents a day, was recently tnrned
