Tho Canal is eight thousand six hundred
and fifty-four (8,054) yards long, and the
avorage fall for tho first throe miles is
fourteen feet, commencing at ten iect, at
Uppor street, in Columbia, and attaining
nineteen feet ono inch at Bridge streot;
tho romaining two miles, from Bridge
street to UB mouth, commences at nine?
teen foet ton inches and attains a mil of
twenty-five feet.
Fine building sites exist hot ween the
Canal and Hiver, giving complete protec?
tion to buildings and machinery from
frcshots. Tho Stato, through the under?
signed, will convey tho Canal, and all its
appurtenances, togothor with tho right of
way for tOO foet on each sido of tho centro
of tho Canal, to tho pnrohascr. Compen?
sation to thc adjacent land-owners, for thc
right of way, to bc made by tho purchaser;
on tho sam? just and equitable terms that
tho right ol way was convoyed to tho

This power lias been accurately surveyed
by Prof. John LeConto, of tho South Ca?
rolina University. Ho estimates that hy
doubling tho original capacity of the
Canal, as required by the Act, that the
power soenred to Bridgo streot will ho 855
iorse-]>owcr, thc averago hoad being four?
teen feet; and from Bridgo street to its
mouth 532 horse-power, with an average
hoad of twenty-one foet, and a current of
ono foot per second. With a curront of
two feot per second tho powers would bu
710 and 1,0G1 horso-power; and if tho ma?
chinery is not run at night tho powor may
be doubled, hy accumulating water in re?
servoirs.
"As tho supply of water," says Prof.
LoConte, "which may be turned from tho
River into thc Caual at its head is almost
unlimited, tho Canal can bo enlarged to an
extent commensurate with the demand for
water powor. If desired, it may bo madu
to supply wator to tho extont of 5,000
horso-power or more. In fact, by very
simulo arrangements, ono-third, or ono
half, or even more, of tho wholo wator in
Broad River might bc turned iuto such au
enlarged Canal.
This water power is wit inn the limits of
tho city of Columbia, and contiguous to
railroads which connect it with nearly
overy County in the Stato of South Caroli?
na, and with tho adjoining States of North
Carolina and Georgia, and their abundant
supplies of cotton, rico, corn, wheat, beef,
pork, and other vegetable and animal pro?
ductions, and also in daily communication
with the sea-ports of Charleston, Savannah
and Wilmington. Tho city is supplied
with gas aud fine water; the climate is sa?
lubrious and healthy, being above the
miasmatic region; lands in the vicinity
are cheap, and tho Boil fortilo; and there
are but few sections iu the South which
present greater attractions for settlement
or residence. Tho water power, from ite
magnitude and advantages, is unequaled
by any lu South Caroliua, and unsurpassed
by any in tho Southern country.
The property will be sold on tho follow?
ing conditions, to wit: let. Tho purchase!
shall, within two years from the date o:
conveyance, completo tho widening anr
deepening of said Canal to at least twici
its original capacity. [Its original capaci
ty was fifteen feet wide at top, eight feel
at bottom, and four feet in depth. Tc

port, it will require the removal of 30,10'
cubic yards of earth, and 3,200 cubic yardi
of stone, to Bridgo street; and from Bridge
street to its mouth 22,176 cubic yards o:

water power sufficient for the purposes o

chargo. (This is estimated, at tho maxi
mum, at 100 horse-powor ] And upon tin
further eoudition that tho work of widon
ing and decponing tho said Canal shall hi
commenced within six months, and tb
sum of $10,000 shall bo expended on tb
saino within twelve months from tho dat
of eouveyanoo.
That one-third of tho sum hid shall h
paid within thirty days after notice of ac
ceptance of bid; one-third at the expira
tion of six mouths therefrom, and tho rc
maining third at tho expiration of twolv

posed to be conveyed shall revert to tin
