Tho Canal is oight thousand six hundred
and fifty-four (8,654) yards long, and tho
average fall for the first three miles is
fourteen feet, commoncing at ten feet, at
Upper street, in Columbia, and attaining
nineteen feet one inch at Bridfro street;
tho remaining two miles, from Bridge
street to its mouth, commences at nine?
toen feet ten inches and attains a fall of
twenty-live feet.
Fin? building sites exist between thc
Canal and Uiver, giving completo protec?
tion to buildings ana machinery from
freshets. Tho State, through iho under
signod, will convey tho Canal, and all it*
appurtenances, together with tho right of
way for 100 feet on each sido of the centro
of tho Canal, to tho purchaser. Compen?
sation to the adjacent land-owners, for thc
right of way, to bo made by the purchaser;
on the satm- just and equitable terms that
the right of way was convoyed to the
Greenville and Columbia Railroad Compa?
ny by Act of December 15, 1815.
This power has been accurately surveyed
by Prof. John LeConto, of thc South Ca?
rolina University. Ho estimates that by
doubling the original capacity of the
Canal, ad required by tho Act, that tho
power sc? nreil to Bridgo street will bo 355
horse-power, thc average head being four?
teen feet; and from Bridgo street to its
month 532 horse-power, with an average
head of twenty-one feet, and a current of
one foot per "second. With a current oi
two feet p<-r second tho powers would bc
710 and 1.061 horse-power; and if the ma?
chinery is not run at night tho power may
bo doubled, by accumulating water in re?
servoirs.
"As thc Bupnly of water," says Prof.
LcConte, "which may be turned from the
Uiver into tho Canal at its head is almost
unlimited, the Canal can bo enlarged to an
extent commensurate with the demand foi
water power. If desired, it may bo made
to supply water to thc extent of 5,001
horse-power or more. In fact, by very
simple arrangements, one-third, or ono
half, or i-veu more, of tho whole water in
Broad Biver might be turned iuto such ai
enlarged Canal."
This water power is within the limits ol
tho city of Columbia, and contiguous tc
railroads which connect it with nearhj
every County in the Stato of South Carob
na, and with tho adjoining States of Nortli
Carolina and Georgia, and their abundan!
supplies of cotton, rico, corn, wheat, beef,
pork, and other vegetable and animal pro
auctions, and also in daily communication
with tho sea-ports of Charleston, Savanna!
and Wilmington. Tho city is supplice
with gas and lino water; the climate is sa
lubrions and healthy, being above tin
miasmatic region; lands in tho vicinity
aro chea]), and tho soil fortile; and then
aro but few sections in tho South whicl
present greater attractions for sottlcmen
or residence. Tho wa: er power, from iti
magnitude and advantages, is uncqualet
by any in South Carolina, and uusurpasse<
by any in tho Southern country.
