NEW ORLEANS, October 23.-The
steamboat Gen. Quitmnu, from Vicks?
burg for New Orleans, was snagged
and sunk yesterda}', twenty miles
above Bayou Sara. All on board
were saved; boat and cargo, consist-1
iug of 1,700 bales cotton and 4,500
sacks cotton seed, a total loss.
Last night, a number of disguised
poisons entered Jefferson Parish jail,
at Carrollton, and shot two negroes,
ono of whom had been twice con?
demned for rapo on white women iu
'GG, and was twice reprieved, once by
Sheridan and onco by Mower. The
other was convicted of rape and the
murder of a white girl, aged eleven,
in Jefferson Parish, a few days ago.
About 2 o'clock this morning, a
fire broke ont at Gretna, opposite
tho upper part of New Orleans, the
work, undoubtedly, of incendiaries.
Reports were current that, during the
progress of the fire, a nnmber of ne?
groes wore discovered stealing goods
saved from tho fire; when a fight oc?
curred and two negroes were killed.
The negroes and whites then gathered
from all quarters, armed, and the
fight became general. A company of
infantry and a body of police from
Now Orleans, however, prevented any
further outbreak. The negroes final?
ly took to the woods, and very few
are to be soon in tho neighborhood.
Nine or teu houses, all frame, were
destroyed. The officers report all
quiot there this evening.

from West Virginia are incomplete.

tion, Kansas, resulted in nine killed
and thirty wounded. The Federals
had only three wounded.

recent eloction for city officers, have
commenced a contest-nearly all will

NEW YORK, October 23.-Tho suit
against William Mah one, for seizure
of the vossol Georgo Leary, at Nor?
folk, in 186G, is up to-day. Muhone
claims that he neted in an offleinl c?
pacity, aa President of tho Norfolk
and Petersburg Railroad, and was
not personally liable. The damages
claimed are $30,000. The case is still
on trial.

is being erected by tho Pork Bank at
No. 206 Broadway, is rapidly ap?

received hero give the particulars of
the insurgent outrages in the pro?
vince of Tunas. The plantations
about La Vetiga were devastated.
The insurgents aro robbing and burn?
ing, and impressing able-bodied men,
white and black. An incendiary pro?
clamation has been found, inciting
the negroes to murder tho whites.
Advices from South America state
that Lopez is roported to havo com?
mitted the grossest outrages since tho
discovery of a conspiracy in his camp.
Largo numbers of thc principal meu
of Ascunsion, whom ho believed to
be involved in the plot against him,
were summarily executed. Several
foreigners who took refuge from his
fury in tho United States Legation?
were dragged out-among them the
Portuguese Consul. His two brother*
and RU his married sisters have benn
imprisoned by him, aud it is supposed
murdered or immured alive in hit
numerous dungeons.
