Grasshoppers in Texas--Startling
Sight.
The plague of grasshoppers is again
sweeping over a large aroa of Texas.
Up to laut advices it had not reached
Dallas, none having been nearer than
Mansfield, Tarrant County, accord?
ing to the Dallas Herald. That paper,
however, has bean] of them at several
places on tho frontier.
At the Sulphur SpringB, on the
Brazos, in tho County of Hood, they
appeared in elouds on Monday, the
21st ult., and ate np every kind of
vegetation. "When they first appear?
ed, it was thought by the campers
around tho Spriugs to be a cloud,
and preparations were made for ruin;
they made a noise in their flight very
similar to a storm of wind and rain.
When they came nearer, however,
they began to descend, and covered
the earth in every direction, consum?
ing all garden stuffs and other green
vegetation they could find.
The following extract of a lotter
from John H. Cochran, Esq., dated
nt Belknap, on the 16th of last month,
describes tho first appearance of the
pest:
Oa yesterday, the 15th, I saw a
sight which I hope no mortal man
will ever see again. About 3 o'clock
P. M., I.went to tho door, and, ob?
serving that the sun shono but dimly,
I looked for the cause. I suw in the
distant West what I took to be the
smoko of an immense, tire, but, on
looked closer, I pcroeivpd that it was
not smoke. What is it? was tho in?
quiry of every one, both old and
youug. It continued to approach,
and in about two hours came near
enough to us to see that it was a
deus? mass of moving matter. Near?
er and nearer, dimmer and dimmer
the sun shines-wo see what it is.
