The South Carol Inn. Democracy Still Firm-Matt Meeting nt Laurens Court House." From Laurens we learn that it was expected that several thousand of tho people of this District would have been present at tho mass meeting on ' the 21st instant, at the Court House. Extensive and ample arrangements, in the Academy Grove, were design? ed to meet the occasion; and the ladies of tho town and tho Distriot all expected to turn out. But when tho day came, a continuous rain prevent? ed a very large gathering. However, in spite of tho rain, n number of the | Democracy assembled, and the spa? cious Court House was crowded with an earnest and attentivo crowd, when the hour of meeting came. A num? ber of elegant club banners adorned the walls of the room. The Hon. Mr. Sullivan, after some introductory remarks, showing his strong adhesion to the Democracy, iutrcduced Col. Thomas as the first speaker, who made his address. The Chairman next presented General Samuel Mc? Gowan, who made ono of his- usual effeQtive, and able and elegant speeches. After a complimentary resolution to tho speakers, prepared by Col. B. W. Ball and adopted, the meeting adjourned to ly, o'clock P. M. At that hour, the crowd again crowded the Court House, and good speeches were made to the colored people by Stowers, Minor and Lee, nil of this place. The scene was enlivened by a display of fire? works. Finally the crowd broke up without any occurrence to disturb the good order of the day and even? ing. What Laurens did under un? favorable circumstances, showed what the gallant District would have done, had the day been a good one. We may add that both Colonel Thomas and General McGowan took occasion strongly to deprecate the ] acts of violence that had been com? mitted in the State. For these the Democracy were in no wise responsi? ble. They counselled peace, forbear? ance and moderation, and hoped that] no violence wonld bo resorted to; j but that by peaceful instrumentali? ties and legal methods, the people would seek their relief and their re? forms. And these sentiments were \ cordially responded .to. GOVERNOR VANCE AND GENERAL KILPATRICK.-Governor Z. B. Vance, of North Carolina, in a letter dated Charlotte, October 18th, notices tho fact that General Kilpatrick has deco? rated him with his disapprobation before the people of Pennsylvania. He informs them, substantially, that be tamed the Governor by capturing bim and riding him 200 miles on a bare-back male. This the Governor denies, and says: "I nun ender ed to General Scho? field, at Greensboro, North Carolina, May 2, 1865, who told mo to go to nay home and remain there, saying if be got any orders to arrest me, he wonld scud there for me. Accord? ingly, I was arrested, on the 13th of May, ut home, by a detach mont of ilOO cavalry, under Major Porter, of Harrisburg, of whom I received -nothing but kindness and courtesy. I came, in a buggy, to Salisbury, where we took the cars. I saw no mule on tho trip, though I thought I Raw au ass nt the General's head? quarters. This impression has been since confirmed." To the People of South Carolina. ?fcwxjw-OrrrssNB: As members bf j your State Executive Committee-a body which represents nearly every white citizen of South Carolina-wo feel it our?<luty to i?vokft yow ear? nest efforts in tho cause of peace and tho preservation of order. Wo beg yea to unite with us in reprobating these recent acts of violence, result? ing in the death of Martin, Randolph and Nance, by which a few lawless' and reokless men have brought dis? credit on the churactcr of our people, though provocation in those cases may havo been given. No cause can pros? per which calls mordor to its assist? ance, or which looks to assassination for success.' "The idea of assassina? tion," said George McDuftie, "is so absolutely abhorrent to all the feel? ings, the Christian feelings of modern times, and of euch pernicious ten? dency, that I feel it to be my duty thus unequivocally to express my utter abhorrence of any proceeding that may have the remotest tendency to suggest it. Such a course is not only obnoxious to the abhorreuco of every honorablo man, from its moral atrocity, but from its political ten? dency." Listen to the words of that patriot, which seem to come from his grave, to warn tho people whom he loved so devotedly. Wo can add nothing to tho weight of this great authority. We can only appeal to you, to sup? port tho laws, to preserve tho peace and to denounce those crimes which have so recently been committed iu some portions of our State. Wo speak in behalf of tho conservative and law-abiding portion of the peo? ple, who constitute, we feel assured, nearly our entire white population, and in their name wo express em? phatically our abhorrence of such acts; and wo pledge ourselves to give all the assistance in onr power to suppress them. We adjuro all who lovo their State, of all classes, white and block, to be peaceable and quiet, to lend their efforts to promoto har? mony and to quell dissension. We ask th oso who aro opposed to us, politically, to unite with us to check and discountenance all incendiary language, whether uttered in public or private, and to join us in the efforts we are making for the pre? servation of peace, thc supremacy of law aud tho maintenance of order. Lawlessness will endanger the peace of tho whole State, and will surely bring disaster to ull classes. Let us all then, however wo may differ in politics, devote all our energies to maintain the good character of our Stato, and to promote a better feeling among our whole people. OUTBAGE. -This morning, about 2 o'clock, tho burn and stables of General McGowan, together with a very valuable horse and some provender, were entirely consumed by fire. The flumes had made such progress, before it was discovered, as to render it. impossible to save the building. It WUK tho work of un incendiary. About the same time at which tho torch was applied to tho building, some un? known person entered the dwelling house of General McGowan, through a window, and, after preparing the way for his exit, in case of alarm, proceeded to ransack tho house, and went to the bed-chamber of Mrs. McGowan, (who was alone, save the presence of two small children,) and forcibly carried her ont of the house, some distance in the yard, where, au alarm being given by her little daughter, she was thrown to the ground, and the villain mado off. In the darkness, it could not bo ascer? tained whetper the perpetrator of the deed was white or black. We hope ho may be ferreted out, and made to suffer tho severest penalties of the law.-Abbeville Press. Mr. J. Patti, a nativo of Charles? ton, employed on the steamer City Poiut, was accidentally killed in Sa? vannah on Wednesday last. It is stated that tho revolution in Spain would havo been a failure but for the defection of the navy. The Queen's Ministry cut down tho pay of the officers, and hence their readi? ness to bring about a change of the Government. Major Cicero Adams, of Edgeflold, who led forth the first company from Edgefield during the late war, died iu Bamberg on the 2d; aged 34. It is stilted that a man named Tho? mas, who was tried before a military commission in Charleston somo timo ago, for a murder committed in Gilli Bonville, recently shot two negroes, man and wife, near the samo place. The Washington papers seem to think Mr. Jefferson Davis will not bo brought up for trial in November; as Chief Justiao Chase will be detained South until December.
