Tho English squadron on the Afri? can coast, for the suppression of the slavo trade, is an excessively expen? sive affair. The number of slaves rescued during the last few years has been very small, owing to the gene? ral stoppage of tho trade. Stnco 1864, seizures have almost ceased, for only nine slaves were taken in that and the three subsequent years. Counting only the pay of the officers and crew of tho squadron, these cap? tures cost $161,000 a head-for the captures were nine and the pay $1,476,276. If we add the other ex? penses of the fleet to its pay roll, we will find that the oost of each slave rescued was not lees than a quarter of a million of dollars. During the last few years a Spaniard is said to have realized a handsome fortune in the city of Mequinez, Morocco, by making de? licious meat patties, large quantities of which were sent to all parts. Something having occurred to excite the suspicious of tho police, they made a descent upon his bakery, and found the body of a woman cut up in real butcher style, and in tho cellar they discovered a large quanti? ty of skulls.
