Y., October 7.-Moore & Sons' grain elevator was burned with 200,000 bushels of grain. NEW ORLEANS, October 7.--Lt. Leo, of tho Freedman's Bureau, who was sont by Major Hutchings, in charge of the Bureau here, to investigate the troubles at Opelousas, reported, this morning, that tho immediate cause of the outbreak was a personal diffi? culty between the editor of the St. Landry Press, (Republican,) and three citizens, growing out of offen? sive nrtioles in the Republican paper. There is just und wide-spread in? dignation felt, not ouly in Wall street, but among tho business pub? lic generally, nt the conduct of the Secretary of the Trousury and tho Assistant Treusurer iu selling gold and five-tweuties at the present criti? cal juncture iu the money market, when it is beiug made artificially stringent by a Ktroug combination of gold and stock speculators, whoso object is to create panic, The unan? imous opinion of disinterested and reputable men in tho financial com? munity is that Messrs. McCulloch aud Van Dyck have acted as the mero tools of this stock-jobbing, gold-gambliug combiuatiou, aud have, therefore, abused tho trust con confided to them and proved them? selves uuworthy of their position. This is a grave suspicion, but all the circumstances of the case go to prove that it is well founded. Moreover, it is not tho first time that they have Elayed into the bauds of bull and ear combinations in gold and stock and brought scandal upou the de? partment. It is, therefore, high time that such a gross abuse should bo stopped, and that stock-jobbers and gold-gamblers should cense to control the administration aud re? sources of the Treasury. We, there? fore, call upon the President to act promptly- in this matter by suspend? ing Mr. McCulloch and Mr. Van Dyck from office, and ordering an im? mediate investigation into the affairs of tho Treasury. They aro evidently using their; official position to pro? mote their interest as stock-jobbers and gold speculators, regardless of tho iujury they may indict upon the public, and as such they aro a dis? grace to the Government. It has been rumored of late that gold has been borrowed from thc sub-Treasury by promiueut bear speculators for purposes best known to themselves, and although we do not vouch for the truth of tho report, it calls for iuvestigatiou. The mo? netary stringency in Wall street was so great yesterday that a quarter per ceut. per diem was paid for loans, and but for the secret aid of tho Treasury this would have been impossible. The question is asked, why did Mr. McCulloch sell gold when tho premium was ten per cent, higher and tho money market was beyond the reach of disturbance, and why, if he had five-twenties to sell, he did not pursuo a similar oourso? How far the blame rests upou the Assistant Treasurer, we cannot say; but as Mr. McCulloch is the respon? sible head of tho department, he must bear the odium of all that has occurred, and tho President should not shrink from the performance of his duty in suspending him on ac? count of any merely personal consi? derations. The public servioe re? quires that it should be done, and that wdiatever corruption there is in the department should bo laid bare by an investigating committee. ?\New York Herald. Madame Ella Eugeno, who rodo through the streets on top of a cage, "escorted by a Mexican lion," was attacked by tho aforesaid lion while iu procession at Gillipolis, Ohio, terribly lacerated, and with difficulty saved from instant death. At Claverack, near Hudson, yester? day, while six men were nt work on the residence of Prof. Flack, of the Hudsou River Institute, tho scaffold? ing gavo way, precipitating tho mon to the ground, fatally wounding one and severely wounding tho others. It is rumored that a conspiracy to dethrone Abdul Aziz, tho reigning Sultan of Turkey, has boen discover? ed in Constantinople A number of political arrests have boen mado thero.
