I On Tuesday last, while Deputy Sheriff
\Villinm E. McMicbael was at thc jail
with GI lugow, tho jailor, superin?
tending iie meal of tho prisoners,
five ?if the prisoners mado an attempt
to escape, by rushing o vor Mr. Mc?
Micbael, and breaking out of tho
yard. But they reckoned without
their host. Mr. McMicbael, seizing
an Enfield riflo kept in tho jailor's
room, did not take timo to fire, but
grasping it by tho barrel, ho used it
with such good effect, as to prostrate I
four of tho villains, and tho fifth, |
having gotten into tho jail yard,
crawled under tho building, during
tho confusion. Tho others were glad
to get up, aud run back to their cell;
and tho Deputy Sheriff soon dis?
covered the whereabouts of Mi*. Muu
under-the-houSe, and ordered bim
out. Ho tried thu running game,
but received a powerful blow on his
neck from tho butt end of tho Eu
fleld, and didn't get any further niter
that,

suspicions, that the Government
should have had no gold to sell when
the price was 150 and money was
abundauc, aud that it should bu n
seller now ?it. much lower figures in
tho midst of artificial monetary strin?
gency engineered by the bears iu
gold, government securities and rail?
way shares. Wall street openly ac?
cuses certain high Treasury officials
of being parties to the movement to
lock up greenbacks for the purpose
of forcing a declino in market values;
and the latter cannot complain, under
tho oircumstaucss, of tho opinion in
which they are held. These sales of
coin aro made secretly, so that the
public has no means ot knowing theil
extent, and tho Assistant. Treasurer
refuses to give the necessary informa?
tion, so that the bears aro enabled to
magnify their amount to suit their
own purposes. Tho pructico of the
Treasury iu selling gold and bonds
secretly through brokers is a grave
abuse, the correction of which is de?
manded by the public interests. Il
only disturbs values for gold to de?
cline rapidly under speculative in?
fluences; for it is certain to re-acl
upward again, and the speculators
are the only gainers by these fluctua
tions.
The artificial pressure for moue]
caused loans to be mudo in some in
stances yesterday at seven per cent,
in gold; but tho holders of stocks re
sisted it very successfully, and bott
Government securities and railway
shares advanced materially in tin
face of it, tho market for securitiei
of all kinds closing strong. The in
dications now aro that this disgrace
ful movement to create panic by in
terferiug with tho circulation wil
prove barren of results on the Stocl
Exchange, and that thennscrupulou
brokers, bank officers and others con
nected with it will bo signally defeat
ed. JEt is, however, to be regretter
that there is no law to punish thor
as they deserve to bo punished. Bu

Flesh-colored gaiters, with tho toes
stitched with black, to look as if the
foot was bare, are reported to be the
newest mode. They aro said to have
a shockingly natural effect.
