No appointment has yet been mado for New York. General Gustar has been ordered I to join his regiment, which is to act | immediately against the Indians. Treasure in the treasury vaults amounts to about $80*000,000. $30,000,000 will, be required on tho 1st of November for interest on five twenties. Internal revenue receipts, t?-day, $457,000. NEW YOBK, October 1.-The bond-1 ed warehouse, known as the Empire j Stores, was burned-loss $500,000. CINCINNATI, October 1.-Jacob I Flinn, the long term Judge of the | Criminal Court, is dead. NEW OBLEANS, October 1.-The new Board of Polioo Commissioners, under the Metropolitan police bill, composed of two negroes and three whites, have oommenoed their duties. One lieutenant and a number of the oldest members of the force have re? signed. In the House, yesterday, two more whites, from the Parish of Baton Rouge, were unseated and replaced | by two negroes. The State Democratic Convention convened yesterday, and organized with a full attendance. To-day a resolution was adopted, declaring that this Convention will entertain tho name of no person as a candidate for elector, who cannot qualify. Five members of the el ce tonal ticket, who are ineligible, resigned their posi? tion, and the vacancies were filled I with eligible men. SELMA, ALA., October 1.-The De? mocratic State mass meeting, to-day, was more numerously attended than any other meeting ever held in tho j State. The attendance is estimated | at 20,000, of whom 3,000 were negroes. The torch-light procession, to-night, is a magnificent affair. There aro several colored clubs in the proces? sion. Since then, we have been making diligent inquiry ooncerniug the matter, and we find that wo wore mistaken, and that tho ravagus of the worm have been very serious iudeed. Planters from several sections of the District inform us that their cottou crop and that of all their neighbors has been curtailed fully one-third by the cater? pillar, while many others assure ns that one-half their crop is gone, by thia means.-Edgefidd Advertiser. TROOPS FOR THE WEST AND SOUTH. President Johnson and General Scho? field had a lengthy iuterview, on Sat? urday last, relative to tho Indian troubles and the sending of troopB to the Southoru States. Tho result of the interview was, that more troop? will be forwarded at once to General Sherman'H Iudiun department, and to General Meade's Southern depart? ment. The ?i9th regiment of infantry, numbering 800 men, passed over to Alexandria, Sunday uight, to take passage for Nashville direct, via Knoxville and Chattanooga. On reaching Nashville, they will be dis? tributed to other points in Tennes? see, to aid in preserving the peace in that State. DEATH OF J AMES RAINSFORD, ESQ. This old and valued citizen is no moro. After two years of complete prostration and much bodily suffer? ing, he departed this life on Friday lust. Mr. Raiusford, as is well known, was a native Englishman, but had lived so long among us os to be thoroughly identified with Edge field, and with the South. He was a man of education, refinement and unblemished probity. lu him, Edgefield loses one of her very best citizens; and all classes deplore his death, with feelings of deepest regret. \Edgefietd Advertiser. THE CATERPILLAR AND ARMY WORM. In several sections of the District, tho caterpillar aud army worm have made their appearance, though it is too late to result in much damage to the cot? ton crop. Only a few farmers report any injury from these swarming visi? tors, and many agree that their ap? pearance will provo beneficial rather than otherwiso, by stripping tho leaves, and allowing the cotton to open more rapidly, in advance of the frost. It will be remembered that these insects appeared in this region last year.-Anderson Intelligencer. DEATH OF DEAN MILMAN.-The cable despatches announce thc death of the Very Reverend Henry Hart Milman, Dean of St. Paul's, London, tho celebrated author and historian, at the age of seventy-seven. This is a serious loss to literature, and will bo generally regretted. Dr. Milman was tho youngest son of Sir Francis Milman, tho physician of King George III, and was born at London, on tho 10th of February, 1791. Raphael Sommes has made arrange? ments with Messrs. Kelley & Pict, of Baltimore, for tho publication of his narrativo of his cruises in tho Sumter and Alabama. Tho volume will contain about 750 pages and will bo illustrated with pictures of Ame? rican ships destroyed by him. NOTICE.
