distinctions in any places of public

a penalty of fine and imprisonment.
At the instance of prominent De?
mocrats, Governor Warmouth ap?
pointed George A. Posdick, Vice
president of th? New Orleans Cham?
ber of Commerce,- a member of the
State Board of Registration. The
other two members are Republicans.
At a meeting of the State Board, on
tho 17th instant, it was decided that
they would not, under any oiroum
stauces whatever, permit a Democrat
to practice on any of the Boards of
Supervisors. Mr. Fosdick presented
a protest against this action, but the
Chairman and ono member, consti?
tuting a majority, refused to recede
from their position
OMAHA, September 19.-A porty of
Government surveyors, on the South
fork of Republican River, were sur?
prised by Indians, and one killed;
the rest escaped. They lost their
instruments, supplies and one team.

There is little hope pf a quorum on
Monday,.at noon; but it is under?
stood that officials of either house
regarded they have the power to take
a recess and put off the congressional
day indefinitely^ On this theory,
Monday's session may cover a week
or two. There seems no doubt of an
ultimate quorum, when, as agreed by
the conference, at which Wade, Col?
fax, Schenck, and others wore pre?
sent, Congress will be adjourned to ]
the 15th of October.
A. G. Riddle lias entered suit, in
the ?amo of A. H. and Eliza T.
Morehead, against Cornelius Boyle,
formerly of this city, but afterwards
of the 'Confederate army and present |
owner of the White Sulphur Springs,
Va., for 085,000 damages. The
plaintiffs allege that the defendant
arrested Mrs. Morehead and im?
prisoned her for tho space of three
years, from the 1st of Jnne, 1861,
and prevented her from returning to
the care and society of her husband
and children. Dr. Boyle was Pro?
vost Marshal in the Confederate
service, and alleges that, nnder the
orders of Gen. Beauregard, ho pre?
vented the plaintiff from crossing and
recrossing the line.
It is stated that Hon. A. H. Ste?
phens' mission here is to obtain I
access to the Confederate archives
held by tho Government, to aid him
in tho history of tho war whioh he is
writing. His success is probable.
