The ' jury has rendered a verdict
against Whalen, for tho murder of
D'Arcy McGee.
Whalen received the verdict with
composure, but asserted hin inno?
cence and denied any connection
with Fenians. He attributed his
conviction to his being a Catholic.
He was sentenced to be hung on
Thursday, the 10 th of December.

was killed last night, in the discharge
of his duty, and was buried to-day
by charity-leaving a widow and or?
phans destitute.
A negro was sworn in as Senator,
for the vacancy occasioned by thc
election of John S. Harris to the
United States Senate.
Affairs In Washington.
WASHINGTON, September 15.-The
Republican majority in Maine is
17,661, compared with the vote of
1866. The Democrats increased tluir
vote 14,876; Republicans inoreased
4,850. Compared with 1867, the
Democrats have increased 10,770;
Republicans inoreased [16,827. The
Chronicle' gives the Republican ma?
jority at 22,000.
Morgan and Schenck have issued a
document, calling upon Congress to
assemble promptly on the 21st in?
stant. It IB not expected that legis?
lative business will be entered upon
at that time, .or that the session will
be longer than to provide for another
adjournment.
