The New York Post relates the follow ing incident: "It is well known in the dry goods trade that a cloth house failed about a week ago, After examining the accounts and the stock, the creditors-whose claims amounted to about half a million dollars-r-wero offered seventy cents on the dollar. Another large house having beard of tho proposition and of the stock on hand, offered to take tho stock and pay the creditors at, par. Their offer was accepted, and the goods are now removing from one store to the other. Both tho creditors and the purchasers are well pleased." The latest pedestrian feat in Eng? land was a novel one. On a wager of ?20, a man accomplished five miles in one hour. One of these was run, One was walked, a third he wheeled a barrow, the fourth trun? dled a hoop, and the fifth was hopped on one leg.. The Democratic party, in National Con? vention assembled, roposing ita trust in tho intelligence, patriotism and discrimi? nating justice of tho people-standing upon the Constitution as tho foundation and "limitation of th,e powers of tho Go? vernment, and tho guarantee of tho liber? ties of tho citizen, and recognizing tho questions of slavery and secession as having been setiied, for all time to come, by tho war, or tho voluntary action of tho Southern States, in Constitutional Con? ventions assembled, and never to bo re? newed or re-agitatod, do, with tho return of peace, demand: 1st. Immediate restoration of all tho States to their rights in tho Union, under tho Constitution, and of civil government to the American people. 2d. Amnesty for all past political offences, and the regulation of the elective franchise in tho States by their citizens. 3d. Payment of the public debt of the United States as rapidly as practicable; all moneys drawn from tho peoplo by tax? ation, except BO much as is requisito for tho necessities of tho Government, econo? mically administered, hoing honestly ap? plied to such payment; and, where the obligations of tho Government do not expressly state upon their face, or the law under which they wero issued dooB not pr?vido that they shall bc paid in coin, they ought, in right and in justice, bo paid in the lawful money of thc United States. 4th. Equal taxation of every species of property, according to its real value, in cluuing Govcrnment bonds and other pub? lic securities. 5th. Ono currency for tho Government and tho people, tho laborer aud the office? holder, tho pensioner and tho soldier, thc producer and the bond-holder. Otb. Economy in the administration of the Government; tho reduction of the standing army and navy; tho abolition of the Freedmen's Bureau, and all political instrumentalities, designed to secure negro supremacy; simplification of tho system and discontinuance of inquisitori? al modes of assessing and collecting inter? nal revenue, so that the burden of taxa? tion may bo equalized and lessened, tho credit of tho Government and the curren? cy made good; tho repeal of all enact? ments for enrolling the State militia in Lo national forces in time of peace; and a tariff for rovenuo upon foreign imports, aud Buch equal taxation, under the inter? nal revenue laws, as will afford incidental protection to domestic manufactures, and as will, without impairing tho revenue, impose tho least burden upon and best promote and encourage tho great indus? trial interests of thc country. 7th. Reform of abuses in the administra? tion, tho expulsion ol' corrupt men from office, tho abrogation of useless offices, tho restoration of rightful authority to and thc independence of tho executive and judiciary departments of tho Govern? ment, tho subordination of the military to tho civil power, to tho end that the usurpations of Congress and thc despot? ism of the sword may cease. 8th. Equal rights and protection for naturalized ana native-born citizens, at home and abroad; the assertion of Ameri? can nationality which shall command tho respect of foreign poiveis, and furnish au example and encouragement to peoplo struggling for national integrity, consti? tutional liberty and individual rights; and the maintenance of tho rights ol natural? ized citizens against the absolute doctrine of immutable allegiance and tho claims of foreign powers to punish them for alleged crime committed beyond their jurisdic? tion. In demanding these measures and re? forms, wo arraign thc radical party for its disrogard of right, and tho unparalleled oppression and tyranny which have mark? ed its career. After the most solemn and unanimous pledge of both nouses of Con? gress to prosecute tho war exclusively for tho maintenance of the Government ana the preservation of tho Union, under tho Constitution, it has repeatedly violated that most sacred pledgo, under which alono was rallied that noble volunteer army, which carried our flag to victory. Instead of rostoring tho Union, it baa, so far RB is in its power, dissolved it, and subjected ten States, in times of profound peace, to military despotism and negro supremacy. It bas nullified there the right of trial by jury; it has abolished tho habeas cor ?nis, that most sacred writ of liberty; it iaa overthrown tho freedom of speech and tho preaa; it has substituted arbitrary seizures and arrests, and military triala and aecret star-chamber inquisitions for tho const inn ional tribunals; it has disre? garded, in time of peace, tho right of the people to be freo from soarches and seiz? ure?; it has entered the post and telegraph offices, and oven tho private rooms of in? dividuals, aud seized their private papers and letters, without any specific charge or notice of affidavit, as required by tho or? ganic law; it baa converted tho American capitol into a baatile; it has established a system of spies and official espionage to which no constitutional monarchy of Eu? rone wonld now dare to resort; it baa abo? lished the right of appeal on important constitutional questions to tho supremo judicial tribunals, and threatens to cur? tail or destroy its original jurisdiction, which is irrevocably vested by tho Consti? tution, while the "learned Ohiet Justice has boon subjected to the most atrocious calumnies, merely because ho would not prostitute his high office to tho support of the falso and partizan charges preferred against the President. Its corruption and extravagance have exceeded anything known in history, and by its frauds and monopolies it has nearly doubled tho bur? den of the debt created by the war. It bas stripped the President of his constitution? al power of appointment even of his own Cabinet. Under its repeated assaults, tho pillars of. the Government aro rocking on their base, and should it succeed in No? vember next, and inaug?rate ita President, wo will meet, as a subjected and conquered peoplo, amid the ruins of liberty and tho scattered fragments of tho Constitution; and we do declare and resolve that, over since tho peoplo of tho United States threw off ?all subjection to the British crown, the privilege and trust of auffrago havo belonged to the several States, and have boen granted, regulated and con? trolled exclusively by tho political power of each Stato respectively, and that any attempt hy Congress, on any pretext what? ever, to deprivo any State of this right, or to interfere with its exercise, is a flagrant usurpation of power which can find no warrant in tho Constitution; and, if sanc? tioned by tho people, will subvert our form of Government, and can only end in a singlo centralized and consolidated Go? vernment, in which tho scnarato existence of tho States will bo entirely absorbed, and an unqualified despotism bo established in place of a Federal Union of co-equal States; and that wo regard tho reconstruc? tion Acts (so-called) of Congress as such aro usurpations, and unconstitutional, re? volutionary, and void; that our soldiers and Bailors, who carried the flag of our country to victory against a most gallant and determined foe, must ovor be grate lully remembered, and all tho guarantees given in their favor must bc faithfully car? ried into execution. That tho public lands should bo distri? buted an widely as possiblo among tbs pooplo, and should bo disposed of either under tho pre-emption of homestead lands, and sold in reasonable quantities, and to no u. bnt actual occupants, at tho mini? mum price established by tho Government. When grants of tho public lands may bo allowed, necessary for tho encouragement of important public improvements, tho proceeds of the salo of such lands, and not thc lands themselves, should bo so ap? plied. That ?ho President of tho United States, Andrew Johnson, in exercising tho power of bis high office in resisting tho aggres? sions of Congress upon tho constitutional rights of tho States and tho people, is en? titled to the gratitudo of tho wholo Amen can people, and in behalf of the Democra? tic party, wo tender him our thanks for bia patriotic efforts in that regard. Upon this platform, tho Democratic party appeal to every patriot, including all the conservative element and all who de? sire to support tho Constitution and re? store the Union, forgetting all past differ? ences of opinion, to .mito with ns in thc present great struggle for tho liberties ol the people; and that to all such, to what? ever party they may havo heretofore be? longed, wo extend tho right hand of fel? lowship, and hail all such co-operatinp with us as friends and brethren.
