THE LEAGUE TOPPLTNG?-We copy the following from the Wilmington Star : LEESVILLE, August 13, 1868. EDITOR STAB: Under false repre? sentations, made to me by the Re? publican party, I was induced to join the Union League, and voted with that party at the hist election. I am now convinced that tho party repre? sented to me, as a Union party, is nothing more or less than a disunion party, and gotten up for the pur ?>ose of putting down the good lonest oitizens of our County and State, and placing in office and power men who have no interest in our wel? fare I hereby renounce all allegiance to the Union League and the party composing it, and declare to the world my purpose to vote, in the 'Presidential election, for the National Democratic candidates, Seymonr and Blair; believing, as I do, that this is the only course left for all good citi? zens who have the welfare of their country at heart. Yours truly, FREDERICK ARNEIT. The New York Sun, speaking of "Stevens as he waa,"says: "He lived and died a bachelor; bnt he was not insensible to the charms and fascina? tions of woman." His dusky house? keeper can testify to that. 1 tf?WArt?TI?Ij AND C?MSrERO?A?.. I Nsw YORK, August 2U-Noon. Stocks very excited-Erie down to 45}?. Gold M. Moiioy active, at 4 (3)5. WALHALLA.-This quiet little vil? lage, seated among the hills near the mountains, in the North-western regions of our State, seems to be but little known to our people in the low countiy, and yet it has advantages which will recommend it to those who may desire to pass a month or two out of the relaxing climate of the sea-shore, or to invalids seeking to renew their health. Being contigu? ous to the mountains, (it is quite near to the great tunnel of tho Blue Ridge Railroad,) it has a bracing atmosphere, cool nights and excel? lent water, as cold when taken from the well as if it had ice in it. Being the present terminus of the Blue Ridge Railroad, it is conveniently accessibly to visitors, and has a daily mail, an advantage not possessed by many of the interior villages of the State. But it may be inquired, what sort of accommodations does tho village afford for the comforts of tho visitor or invalid. Theso are very good. At the Walhalla Hotel, (owned by Mr. Biemann, ono of tho few Democratic Senators to the present radical Legis? lature, in Columbia,) a good table is found, provided with an abundance and variety, with attentive servants and a most industrious, obliging landlady, who, in tho absence of Mr. Biemann, is very watchful over the comforts of her guests, especially of those who may bo sick. But ono of the distinguishing peculiarities of Walhalla is their moderato price for board. Whilst in most of the hotels in tho State, from Charleston up? wards, through all the interior towns, the price of board is from two dollars and fifty cents to three dollars per da}', or from fifteen to twenty-one dollars per week, tho price at Wal? halla, for board equally as good, if not better, is but seventy-five cents per day, or five dollars per week-a very important consideration in these times of pecuniary distress among our people. Walhalla is surrounded, too, by an industrious, thrifty Gorman popula? tion, from whom the village receives a good supply of poultry, fresh but? ter, vegetables and fruit in their sea? son, all of which maj' bo procured at moderate prices.-Charleston News. ALMOST A SERIOUS MATTER.-A certain honorable (?) Senator, who generally goes homo via tho King's Mountain Railroad, came near being precipitated from the platform of a car belonging to the Charlotte Road. It seems that a colored Democratic speaker had taken passage on board tho same car, and, understanding the Senator, fresh from the sceno of his legislative honors, was seated within a fow feet of him, concluded to have a little chat on tho political topics of tho day. In the course of tho con? versation, the Senator became quite enraged, and mado an effort as though he intended to make use of his "shooting-iron," which lay con? cealed somewhere in tho neighbor? hood of his 'ioil heart." The co? lored man, thereupon, (so says ru? mor,) seized him by tho seat of his "inexpressibles," and conductod him to tho platform of the car, threaten? ing, at the same time, to give him an outside passage on terra Jinna. The Rose wilted!-Chester Standard. The papers speak vory highly of the now state-room cars, on tho through line between New York and Washington. They are unexcelled. : ?ft ^IJ.t. S )' ?f I ; : 'i Tho proprietors of tho Baden-Ba den gambling hell sustained heavy losses at the beginning o? July, in ouuatjqueuiw of the extraordinary luck which au old lady from England had nt the roulette table. She woo, in five days, nearly a hundred thon eund florins; and then, instead of losing it again, as the proprietors of the hell had fondly hoped, she went to a banking house, bought a draft for the whole amount, and left the place. LAST WORDS.-It is important to know the last words of great men, as their biographers are apt to credit them with high sounding phrases they never uttered. It is agreed that Thad. Stevens' final articulation waa "Give me some ice!" Perhaps his tongue anticipated some reminders of that "penitentiary" to which he wished all "rebels" consigned. A denf and dumb negro, who, it is ,suid, was an important witness in the McSwino assassination case, was murdered on the 3d inst., by the Loyal Leaguers, nt Coffeeville, Miss A few nights afterwards, a baud of men, in masks, took the assassins of McSwine from the Coffeeville jail and hung them. The bugs are said to have stripped whole potato fields in Ohio, leaving nothing but the naked stems; from these they assailed cabbage leaves and other vegetables; while the grass? hoppers had levied on the clover fields, cabbage, potatoes, oats and timothy, laying low every stem, and leaving the fields as buretas a floor. THE GOLCONDA.-The American Colonization Society's ship, the Gol? conda, which sailed from Savannah, Georgia, on the 14th of May, with 451 emigrants, arrived, all well, at Monrovia, Liberia, on the 19th of June-having made a short passage of thirty-four days. In Bichmond, Indiana, a 200-pound negro recently fell from the second story of a grocery, and lit on Mr. Charles Plummer, who was working in the room beneath. It was a soft thing for the darkey, but rather rough on Mr. Plummer, who was smashed all of a heap. The great railroad iron bridge which has been building since Febru? ary, 1867, by the Chicago and Bur lington Railroad Company, across the Mississippi, was, Thursday, pro? nounced complete, and trains ran across it, connecting Chicago to the great West by one more iron link. The Chester Standard states that Pleasant Goode and William Stow ers-two colored speakers from Co? lumbia-addressed large audiences in that District recently, and believes that the colored people were favora? bly impressed. Fifteen hundred miners of the Mahoning Valley, Ohio, who have been on a strike for nearly four months, have agreed to resume work. The strike is a failure with them, they not receiving the additional twenty cents per tou demanded. Spots on the sun have lately re? ceived moro than usual attention from astronomers. Some of them are very large, and it is expected that in a day or two ono of them may be? come visible to the naked eye, smoked glass being used, of course. A Democratic mass meeting is to be held in Abbeville on tho 26th in? stant, and a numbor of eminent gentlemen of South Carolina and Georgia have been invited to be pre? sent and address the meeting. Some one said of a very handsome woman whose feet were immense: "She's very pretty; but she upsets completely the ordinary system of measuremeat, by proving that two feet make a yard." General Grant's record is kuowu for his many achievements in the field, his uncompromising hatred of rebels, and his endorsement of the acts of Congres?. While Baltimore is having a fair retail trade and many visitors, New York is said to bo dull as a deserted village. FOR RENT. THE TWO STORY BRICK DWELLING, on Main street, now occupied by W. C.
