THE POPULAR TASTE.-Somebody
suggests that "Champagne Charlie"
is the most popular air, at present,
in this city. It is whistled by every
sniffling urchin, sung by every gay
chanteuse, hummed by everybody ]
else, played to death on every hand
organ, and resurrected and re-mur?
dered on every piano, violin, flute,
banjo, harp and guitar iu the metro?
polis. What an odd thing is popu?
larity! For "Champagne Charlie"
is really a coarse, common-place,
vulgar song, without a trace of ge?
nius in it; and the music, apart from
the vivacity of ita chorus, is destitute
of. either grace or melody.

A dissertation on tenement houses,
recently published by Dr. W. P.
Thomas, gives some valuable inform?
ation on an important subject. It is
believed that there are 20,000 tene?
ment houses in Now York, which
contain, on au average, four families
to each story, with live persons to
each family, each person having
about fifteen square feet of ground
area, and 480 cubic feet of air-1,000
cubic feet of air being absolutely
necessary for the health of each in?
dividual.
