RALEIGH, July 2.-The Legislature
assembled yesterday. Chief Justice
Pearson, in obedience to Orders from
Qen. Ganby, after having taken the
oath of offioe provided by the new
Constitution, administered the same
to associates, and the Governor elect,
W. W. Holden. Judge Reade then
administered the oath to .members
of the House, and Judge Dick to
members of the Senate. Credentials
of nine members, of .Senate and nine
vf House, who were presented and
barred by the Howard amendment,
were laid oh the table. Joseph W.
Holden, eon of the Governor, was
elected Speaker of the House. Both
Houses were organized, and Governor
Holden seht in a brief message. In
the House, the Howard amendment
waa adopted by ? vote of 78 to 20;
?and in the Senate'by a vote of 84
to 2.
JACKSON. MISS., July 1.-^Forty
seven out of sixty-one Counties re-1
turn a majority against the Constitu?
tion of 18,966; four of the remain?
ing Counties will return majorities
for the Constitution. Ko ease of vio?
lence has yet been reported from any
portion of the State during the pro?
gress of ihe election. This County,
with a registered, black majority of
1,700, gave but 829 radical majority.
Lowndes County, with a registered I
block majority of. 3,000, returns but |
1,200 radical majority.
KEW YOEE, july 2.-Delegates are I
fast arriving; A meeting of the
General Committee of Soldiers and
Sailors was held last night. A ma?
jority of them favor Hancock; some
support Blair. It is stated that Hen?
dricks will decline being a candidate,
in favor of Pendleton. There is a|
rumored combination between Penn?
sylvania, New York, Kew England
and Kew Jersey, to beat Pendleton.
Doolittle is mentioned 'favorably for
Vice-President. Thurman, of Ohio,
with ' a large number of Pendleto

aspirant for tho office of Mayor of the city
of Columbia, and that his petition was
sent fn ' td tue Union League of that city
for the nomination for Mayor.
2d. That, on many occasions, he pub?
licly avowed that he was a Republican and
with the Republican party.
3d. That, if nominated, he would insist
upon one-half of the Aldermen of tho city
being nominated from the colored men,
and that he was willing to sit with them
in Connoil, and that one-naif of tho Police
should bo colored men. This was pro?
mised by bim, and so understood by us, to
enable' him to givo the casting vote in
Council, and thereby carry out tue princi?
ples of the Republican party.
4th. Tho deponents further testify, that,
on tho occasion of a serenade^ut tho Na?

composed principally of colored men, into
his house, and there and then made the
Statement that his house was open to all
is friends, irrespectivo of color, and
drank hana in hand with his colored
friends to the success of the Republican

Constitution, that Robort Joyner said he
would go down with the box to Gadsden,
and that, having great influence at that |
precinct, he would do all he could to carry
the election for tho Republican party.
