Tho following, from the New York
World, shows that the Democrats of
the North are beginning to awake to
the importance of securing a portion
of the Southern negro vote in the
Presidential election :
"Another object of this bill, is to
secure the electoral votes of the
re-admitted States for the Republi?
can candidates. In . this, . judging
from, the present appearances, they
seem likely to be successful. There
is no possible way by which the
D?mocratie party can prevent Presi?
dential electors being chosen in those
States, or prevent the votes of those
electors being counted. The only
thing we can do, is to make a atrenu
oua attempt tb carry those States for
our ticket ; and, considering the
?rreat number of whites who are dis
ranohised, our only chance of suc?
cess consista in dividing the negro
vote. But the Democratic party
does not seem likely to adopt any
efficient method of doing this. For
our part, we do not yet see the wis?
dom pf letting seventy electoral votes
go by default and turn the scale
against us. Wo need to bring over
but a very small per centage of them
to carry every Southern State. A
man may reasonably object to being
soused into a muddy mill-pond, and
is a fool if he does not struggle with
all his might against tho attempt of a
gang of ruffians to fling him in; but,
being in, he is equally a fool if he
{>refers to sink, rather than save his
ife by swimming in such dirty
water.
