at Ashland, Va., says that, one inci?
dent occurred which touched the
feelings of alL The grave of a Fede?
ral soldier was found. "Shall we
dec?rate this grave?" ?aid a lady.
For a moment there was silence, and
then, with one voice, all said: "Yes,
for he sleeps now side by side with
our own dead." And tho same fair
hands which decorated the graves of
tho Southern' soldiers, now strewed
flowers over the grave of their enemy
sleeping so silently by their sides.
Grant was asked, the other day,
what he meant by having no policy
to oppose against the will of the
people. "I meant," he is reported
to have replied, "that whichever way
Congress goes, I will go; for I con?
sider that Congress is the people."
