Tile University of South Carolin?. The Wilmington Star says: "The University of Sonth Carolina ?will be dosed siter the present ses? sion." * " It is very strange that unfounded rumors, injurious to the university, arise from time to time at a distance from this oity. The institution has been dispensing its blessings since the year 1804. It is known through the length and breadth of tbe land and beyond the Atlantic. There is no reason to suppose, if left alone, that its future career will not be brighter and more useful than its past. If all whom it has educated, and all who are truly interested in its welfare, (which should be equiva? lent to saying all the intelligent mon in tbe State,) would bear in mind not only the public interests and tho ad? vantages of educating our youth nt homo, but the privations, labors and incessant devotion to their duties of the gentlemen who fill the professor? ships in the university, there would be in every section some voico raised to promote its prosperity and Bccuro its permanence. From the catalogue before ns, it appears that there arc 113 studonts in attendance, and seventy lectures and recitations every week, or more than 2,700 during the session of niuo months. We could mention, be? sides, numerous other labors engaged in by the professors, not including the weekly public lectures they de? livered from November last to May. Their pay is inadequate to the proper support of their famibes; yet their interest in the university has kept them from seeking elsewhere posi? tions easy for them to attain and more remunerative. Any rumor that prevents students from coming here, and thereby strips from tho profes? sors still more of their little income, ought to be promptly met by the trustee?, (if they core for the univer? sity as they should,) or by tho alumni, or by some friendly editor, if thoro be in the State on editor who is friendly to this institution. When the university fails, all will then sing a dirge, according to Carolina cus? tom, and say some pretty things about being blind to our welfare, and sending tens of thousands of dollars to build up the colleges and universi? ties of other States. What good reason havo we to sup? pose that the coming Legislature will attempt to break down the uni? versity, or force upon" it any innova? tion which would render it less thou heretofore the resort of young gen? tlemen throughout the South who desire to qualify themselves in tho higher branches of education? Only iguorance or malignity could prompt such an interference with the univer? sity as would drive its profressors and students abroad, and quench thc sacred light which has beamed within its walls for more than half a cen? tury. Until such folly or spiteful? ness be exhibited, wo feel safe in denying any rumor about the discon? tinuance of the university. // cannot ie discontinued by the Faculty, and .tho Board of Trustees cannot discon? tinuo it, except by authority from tho Legislature, and the new Consti? tution requires the Legislature to continue it. Let this fact put to rest . all such rumors. ? Of all our State institutions, the university stands forth now tho only remaining one, aronnd which still beams the lustre of old Carolina noble? ness. While everything in Thebes was laid prostrato by its enemies, ; their respect for literature left Pin 'dar'sabodeunharmed. Tho party tem? porarily dominant in the Stato havo room enough for the education of ne? gro boys, and should seo to it, if they have any wisdom, that tho university be left exclusively to the whites. Un? less they do so, it will be a university in name only. It remains to be seen if those crying loudest for education intend to be its insidious enemies, and to put out the lights on the altars of learning, while attempting to force a social equality which they know can never be maintained. Until then, let all who aro patriotic couti nue to support thoir own institution, and not destroy it beforehand, by conjuring up hobgobblins to detor students from coming here.
