vinced that an industrious and thrifty

ment, and opposed to oppression in
all its forms; and whereas there is in
this State a vast amount of idle lands
and large opening for an increase of
population, and believing that there
is no settled part of the United States
where greater inducements in oheap
and productivo lands exist to attract
foreign immigration, os well as immi?
gration from the more densely set?
tled Northern States; therefore,
Resolved, That it is every way de?
sirable and important to encourage
immigration from Europe and tho
North, and that it is incumbent on
every good citizen to use every effort
to induce such immigration by all
lawful and proper means.
Resolved, That a committee of five
bo appointed to open a correspond?
ence with such persons as may assist
in this object, wherever they may bc,
and that such committee bo request?
ed to procure information from per?
sons throughout this District, and
pai'ta adjoining, as to lands, to be

expedient.
Resolved, That, inasmuch as there
has been a great deal of systematic
falsehood and misrepresentation re?
specting the disposition of the white
people of this State towards immi?
grants from tho New England and
other Northern States, we deem it
due to ourselves, to truth, and to our
best interests, to disabuse the minds
of our Northern fellow-citizens of all
falso impressions that may have been
oreated ; and we solemnly proclaim
our desire to hail white immigrants
from the North with cordial welcome
and encouragement, knowing that all
such immigrants who may settle
among us for the purposes of pro?
moting their own welfare will be
necessarily prepared to sustain the
common interest of the State against
the machinations of adventurers and
renegades of every olass. .
