fraud, said: ..Fraudulent practices

moud, that even the judicial ermine
had been stained." The section con?
ferring the appointing power on
commissioners was discussed nutil

Departments are all closed, and
the city is perfectly quiet.
The Democratic majority in Oregon
is now stated at 2,000.
Mr. Calvert, conservative judge of

another victory at Rhetynius. Other
battles took place at Selino and

Turks had 400 men killed and

ty in both Houses. This Legislature
will shortly be coiled upon to elect a

spirited meeting of tho Democratic
Club of this place was held in the
.court house, on Saturday evening
last. An able and stirring address
was delivered by Hon. Thomas C.
Perrin. Since tho organization of
tho club, tbo number of colored
members has steadily increased, and
it is gratifying to sec the interest
manifested by them iu tho success of
the party with which they have cast
their lot. Tho result of the election
now being held, wo opine, will show
a large number of tho ballots of col
orcft voters in a different light from
that in which they appeared at the
Inst election.-Abbeville Banner.
Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe has
lately returned to Hartford from her
Florida residence. She has a very
pretty placo there on the St. John's
River. Mrs. S. says tho Southern
people are no moro inclined to resist
the Jaws, or to foster the spirit of
rebellion, thnn Vermont is. She
tested the real feeling of the people
in her somewhat extended journey all
over Florida, and found them so
kind, that they would even surrender
their own sleeping accommodations
to her.' They desire only peace and
the restoration of the Union.
