WASHINGTON, June 1.-At daylight, this morning, all the voting places were crowded with negroes. The election is progressing quietly, with chances favoring tho Democrats. At 10 o'clock, to-day, the President conducted Schofield to the War apartment. After the President loft, Gen. Grant visited Secretary Scho? field. In the Senate, n resolution, thank? ing Stanton, passed, Henderson, Ross and Fowler, Republicans, vot? ing nay. The Arkausas bill was resumed, and, after a very long dobnte, passed-34 to 8-as it came from the House. Tho bill goes to the President. The Judiciary Committee report against Stanbery's confirmation. No present change in the subordinate personel of Department contemplat? ed. Adjourned. In the House, under regular call, various bills and resolutions were presented, of miuor importance, and separately disposed of. Van Trump offered a resolution, that the Committee on Military be instructed to negotiate with the Mount Vernon Association for the historical key of the French hostile, now in their possession, for the use of the Capitol turnkey. . The House re? fused to receive the resolution. A resolution calling for informa? tion in regard to the arrest of citi? zens of Columbus, Georgia, lies over. A bill was introduced forbidding prosecutions against tho Treasury and Freedman's Bureau agents, for official acts; also a resolution declar? ing national bonds taxable for na? tional purposes, The House refused to entertain the resolution, declaring it a violation of the Constitution to seize private telegrams and papers. A recess was ordered from 4 to 7. Radical canvassers are doubtful. Democrats more confident. At the close of the votes, betting odds were in favor of tho Democrats, by 300 to 500. The President has assigned Gen. Stoncman to the command of Vir? ginia. LANCASTER, PA., Juno 1.-James Buchanan died this morning-aged seventy-seven. SAN FRANCISCO, Juno 1.-Two heavy earthquakes were felt at San Francisco, on Saturday night, and extended throughout Nevada. At Virginia City, buildings were rocked, and people fled, and the pumps in Savage mine were stopped. RICHMOND, June 1.-Gen. Scho? field telegraphs this morning, from Washington, as Secretary of War, directing Gen. Stoneman, tho rank? ing officer, to take command of tho First Military District. GALVESTON, June 1.-To-day, Geo. P. Douglass, late General Internal Revenue Tax Inspector, was indicted .by tho graud jury for complicity in bonded warehouse and whiskey frauds. The telegraph offices of Baltimore and Washington are ransacked for private tolegrams, and the managers consent to obey the summons of a committee, constituted by a party, and for tho worst of party purposes. No business, no message, no letter, no dinner-table, no bed? room, no library, no kitchen, even, is sacred from the iutrusi?n of these vagabond impeachers, set on by Ben Butler. His detectives, paid for by the Government, aro in New York, to-day, as they are in Washington city, and elsewhere. They use, not only the post offices bf the country, but all ite machinery. They demand that Senators shall be arraigned, and seek to destroy their good names, by holding them np ns capable of cor? ruption. No wonder that Bingham is sick. If he had in him a particle of manhood, he would hang his head in very shame, if, indeed, like J adas, he did not even hang himself. ? ? Neither men nor women are what I they seem.
