to influence and intimidate Senators.
Henderson stated that he bad been
requested to appear, before the ma?
nagers, and desired the sense of
the Senate on his duty. A long aud
desultory discussion ensued, the
radicals maintaining that the object
of the managers was to elicit foots to
support the additional articles of
gravagen, whereof the President at?
tempts to corrupt Senators; to this
end, Henderson should testify; the I
Democrat* maintaining that the pro-1
ceedings were against the Senators.
In this sense, Henderson rightly re?
fused. Without action, adjourned to
' Monday.
CHICAGO, May 20.-The Southern
States were called, and represented
on all committees. Governor Hawley,
permanent President, was introduced
to the Convention by Governor
Brown, of Georgia. Tho Southern
States are represented among the
Vice-Presidents and Secretaries in
the permanent organization.
CHICAGO, May 21.-In the Repub?
lican Convention, the Committee on
Resolutions reported, congratulating
the country on the assured success
of the Congressional plan of recon?
struction. Congress must guarantee
and maintain suffrage to the South?
ern loyalists; denounces repudiation
os a national crime; the national ob?
ligations must be poid in letter and
spirit; the Government should be ad?
ministered with the strictest econo?
my; corruption and extravagance,
fostered by Johnson should be re?
formed. Abe Lincoln's death v.-a s
deplored. Deploring Johnson's ac?
cession, the resolutions denounce
him as a usurper, violator of the
laws, obstructor of reconstruction,
and justly impeached of high crimes
and misdemeanors. No citizens, na?
tive or naturalized, must bs impri?
soned when abroad, except for viola?
tions of law. Eulogizes the soldiers
and sailors-their bounties are obli?
gations never to be forgotten; their
orphans and widows are the nation's

The Convention sympathizes with all
the oppressed people who are strug?
gling for their rights. The resolu?
tions were adopted-2 or 3 only dis?
senting. Gen. Grant was unanimous?
ly nominated for President. Gov.
Brown, in announcing Georgia's
vote, said the maxim of the Georgia
Republicans, was "enemies in war
in peace friends." On the first ballot
for vice-President, Wade received
149; Fenton 132; Wilson 109; Colfax
118; Harlan 16; Kelly 6; Creswell 14;
Pomeroy 1. On the fifth ballot, Colfax
was nominated, recoiving 552 votes.
The Convention then adjourned, sub?
ject to the call of the President.
