Mn. EDITOR: In this State, where
there has formerly been but one
party, and?that the party who went
in for a strict construction of the
Constitution uu? a rigid adherence lu
principle, regardless of the claims
that might bo set up by particular
persons, the masses of the people are
not aware of the tricks to which the
party composed of spoils-men and
place-hunters hare been in the habit
of resorting, for the purpose of de?
feating the party of principle. Per?
mit'one who has spent a good many
years of his lifo in a region where
party spirit has run high, to warn
the people of this State, and particu?
larly the citizens of Columbia, against
a common device of the enemy. It
has always been a favorite plan of
operation with the party opposed to
tho Democratic party, to assail the
latter by the instrumentality of wea?
pons forged from Democratic mate?
rial. Emissaries will, when a can?
vass is inaugurated and candidates
placed iu tho field, approach some
member who has been understood to
be a candidato for position in the
Democratic party, but who has failed
to obtaiu a nomination, and endeavor
to persuade him that ho has boen
grievously wronged, iu that he has
not received tho nomination, nud
that he is the choice of tho rank and
file of tho party; ?nd even that,
should he run as an independent can?
didate, he could get a strong vote
from the opposition party. Thus
flattered by a few designing members
of the opposition, it has frequently
been the case that ambitious Demo?
crats, whose aspirations had not been
gratified by a nominatiug conven?
tion, have announced themselves as
independent candidates for office.
But what has always been the result?
It has almost invariably been thc
case, that all that such candidatos
could accomplish was to create a
division in their own party, not in
the least beneficial to themselves,
but sometimes highly detrimental to
the interests of the Democracy-for it
hos never failed to occur that tue oppo?
sition, when thore was a ghost of a
ohance for their own success through
the dissensions of the Democrajy,
have concentrated their strength on
men of thoir own party, and fre?
quently elected them to office; while
tho independent candidate, who was
week enough to be duped by them,
is left shivering in the cold.
"What has been may be again;"
and it will assuredly be the case in
our approaching municipal election,
if tho Democracy do not concentrate
to a man on the party nominees, that
the party which is composed ol
"black spirits and white, blue spirits
and grey," but mostly black, will
elect a Mayor and Aldermen of theil
own stripe. Why should any white
man in Columbia, or any colored
Democrat, refuse to support the De?
mocratic nominees for municipal
offices? It was left to ?ach ward tc
nominate its own candidates for Al?
derman, and if there is a white- man
in Columbia who did not participate
in the nomination, it is his own faull
-for fair notice was givou. Then,
as to the Mayoralty, tho nominatiug
committee was, according to a reso?
lution of the District club, to bc
selected by tho ward clubs; and il
that was not impartially managed,
nobody was to blame, except those
who failed to attend tho meetings o:
