A terrible scene was enacted in the
San Francisco police oourt on tho 2d
inst., when a prisoner stood np in tho
dock, drew a razor suddenly across
his throat, and held it up in view of
the court nud spectators, dripping
with blood. A great stream gushed
from his neck; but there he stood
glaring about and still holding the
bloody razor high in his right hand.
All who saw him seemed for the in- !
stant petrified with horror; but Judge
Provines oried out, "Seize that mani
seize him and carry him below.
Several officers caught him and took
the razor ont of his hand. He was
instantly taken below into the prison
and a surgeon sent for. When taken
down, and while the blood was yet
pouring in a torrent from his throat,
ne stood partly up, staggering and
striking at all who came within his
reach; but before the physician ar?
rived, he fell over and expired.
In France, tho laws are very strict
against persons in civil life carrying
weapons. An invention has recently
been made, however, which, while
conforming to the law, is a partial aid
as a means of defence against night
robbers. It consists of a small horn
inserted in tho end of a cane, which
contains an electric battery and a
small lamp with two powerful rellec
tors. The intensity of this light, i
is said, temporarily blinde any per
' son at whom it is pointed. The lamp
is kindled at will, by pressing a small
knob at the other end of tho stick,

I SPECIAL NOTICES-_
FRIGHTFUL PROPHECIES con
ccrning the end of all tilings are
made by religions enthusiasts; and,
on the other hand, philosophers in?
sist that the centre of the earth is a
mass of fire-that the polos of tho
earth will one day be at the equator,
and that the sun is gradually fading 1
Talk like this is very terrible; but,
pending snoh wholesale calamities, it
will bo as well for each member of
society to take care of his or her
health, and leave the rest to Provi?
dence.
The end comes prematurely to nil
who neglect the preservation of that
inestimable blessing. Suffer liver
disease, dyspepsia, ohronio constipa?
tion or any other ailment to tako its
course unchecked, and it will assured?
ly shorten life. It cannot be said
that the means of protecting the sys?
tem against tho predisposing causes
of disease are withheld. The con?
stitutions and physique of the least
robust may be so strengthened aud
fortified by a course of HOSTET
TER'S STOMACH BITTERN as to
render them all but iuvulnernablo,
not only to the attacks of epidemic
disorders, but also to the ordinary
complaints which prevail in all coun?
tries and at all seasons. If tho im?
mense importance of PKOTECTIVE
iir.mcA.TioN were universally under?
stood, tbis incomparable vegetable
antidote, which is already the most
popular tonic in the world, would
everywhere be classed among the
staples of life, and no family would
dare to be without it. The time maj
arrive when this will be the case, foi
every vear adds hundreds of thou'
sands to tho list of those who use it.
