NEW ORLEANS,- Mny 2.- Official re? torna of thc election are not y?tpub lished. The liepubliccyi gives returns from nil tho parishes, making the ma? jority for the Constitution 17,803. They also claim 22 Republican State Seuators, against 14 Democrat?; 60 Republican members of the House, and 41 Dem?crata, Warrnouth's ma? jority for Governor ls slightly in ex? cess of the Constitution. Two Pre? sidential eieotora and several Chicago delegates are. colored. RICHMOND, Mny 2.-Jeff. Davis* bail bond was 'renewed to-^ay. Tho neensed is to appear on emoh n day durina? tho nert l?rm ii? tb? c?iirt may hereafter fix. The Judge said Chief Justice Chase had told him that he Would be in Richmond to preside at Mr. Davis* trial within a few days after the impeti?hment trial" had concluded. Tho new bond given was by Horace Greeley, Coruelius Vanderbilt and Gerritt Smith, for ,$25,000 each, and the i-cmaining $25,000 is given by oitizeus of Rich? mond. This was done by instruc? tions from the parties named. Ex Senator Bright, of Indiana, was in tho court room. Gen, Lee und Ex Secretary Seddon were in the city to atteud ns witnesses. It is thought the trial will take place the last of May. Gen. Schofield made soverul ap? pointments of municipal officers for Richmond, to-day. Among them is one colored man. WASHINGTON, May 2.-Stevens in? formed tho Reconstruction Commit? tee that he was sich, and no meeting was held to-day. Tho offensive speeches in the House last night were patieutly swallowed. Serious conse? quences improbable. Nothing done in tho House to-day. In tho impeachment court, Stan bery proceeded with his argument. Tho Slur says heavy bets were made yostorday, and adds that they are now three to one in favor of con? viction. $24,000,000 was drawn from the Treasury yesterday, to pay interest on the five-twenties-reducing the coin on hand to $60,000,000. No more coin will be required until July 1, when the demand will bo $27,000, 000. The disbursements during the month were: Por the civil list, $0,000,000; war, $7,000,00!); uaw. $2,500,000. The Republican Congressional Committee have ndvicea from Loui? siana that they have only one majori? ty in tho Senate, which will prevent the Adoption of the fourteenth arti? cle, thus delaying reconstruction. Internal revenue receipts, to-day, $1,245,000; of the week, $4.500.000. In the House, Donnelly, of Min? nesota, and Woshburne, had n war of words, relative to a letter written by tho latter. Donnelly denounced his opponent so severely, that the Speak? er called him to order, six times. Washbume replied that he could ranko no answer to a mun who had been false to his friends, his party, his country, his religion aud his God. Slr. Stuubcry'ti Sp?i-ch. WASHINGTON, May 2. -St&nbcry concluded as follows: "Now listen for a moment to one who understands Audrow Johnson better than most of you, for his opportunities have been greater. When, nearly two years ago. he eillod ma from tho pursuits ol' my professional calling to take a seat iu his Cabiuet, I answered the call under a sense of public duty. I came here almost a stranger to him aud to every momber of the Cabinet, except Mr. Stanton. We had been friends for mnnj' years. Senators, need I tell yon, that all my tenden? cies aro conservative. You, Mr. Chief Justice, who have known mo for a third of a century, eau bear me witness-law, not arms, is my profes? sion. From the moment that I was honored with a seat in tho Cabinet of Mr. Johnson, not a stop was taken that did not come under my observa? tion; not a word was said that es? caped my attention. I regarded him closely in Cabinet, and still more in private and confidential conversa? tion. I saw him often tempted with bad advice. I know that evil coun? sellors were more than once around him. I observed him with the most intense anxiety ; but never in word, in deed, in thought or in action, did 1 discover in that man anything but loyalty to tho Constitution and laws. He stood firm ns a rock against all temptation to abuse his own powers, or to exercise those which were not conferred upon him. Steadfast and self-reliant in tho midst of all difficul? ty, when dangers thrcutoned, when temptations were strong, he looked only to the Constitution of his coun? try and to the people. Yes, Senators, I havo seen that niau tried as few Lavo been tried. I have seen his confidence abused-I have seen him endure day after day privations such as few men h.ive ever been called i;pon to met ?. Fear not to acquit him. The Constitution pf the country is us safe in his hands from violence, ns it w as in the hands of Washington. But if, Senators, you condemn him; if yon strip him of thc robes' of office; if you degrade, him to the ut? most st veto1.. Of your pi wcv: murk aa 1 . 11 B?a ' ! j ..? ? ? the prophecy. Tho strong arms of ^ the people will be abonthjm; they will find a way td raise him fr?m any depths to . which yon may consign ? him, anti w? ?hall live to see him re? deemed; and td hear the racieetio voico Of the peOpla"'well done, faith? ful servnpt-yon shall have your re? ward." But if, Senators, as I cannot believe but which has been boldly said, with ahnest official sanction, yonr votes have beeu canvassed and the doom of the President is scaled, then let that judgment not be pro? nounced ib this Senate Chamber t'nst here where our Camillus, in the tour of our greatest peril, single? handed met and bullied tho enemies, of, the .Republic-not herej where ho stood faithful, among the faithless. No, not here. Seek out rather the darkest and gloomiest chamber in the subterranean recesses of the Ca? pitol, where the cheerful light nf)Hay never enters-there erect "the altar and immolate the victim. THE RECONSTRUCTION COMMITTEE OK THE CONSTITUTIONS or THE SOUTH? ERN STATES.-A meeting of the Re? construction Committee wns held this morning, which lasted for somo time. Tho question of restoring South Carolina and Arkansas to their former relations with the other States was considered at length, and the Constitution of tho first named State, which is the only one here, was the subject of discussion. No fluni con? clusion was arrived at, the whole matter being postponed until the Constitutions of the other Southern States arrive. Tho purpose of tho Committee is to have all of tho Southern States restored to the Union Under Constitutions as nearly alike as possible, and presenting a positive uniformity on the subjects of education and suffrage. On Sa? turday next another meeting will be held, at which time it is expected that the Constitutions of Arkansas, North Carolinn, Georgia nud Louisi? ana will have arrivod, and the Com? mittee be enabled to adopt some defi? nite plan of restoration. It is be? lieved, however, and generally conceded, that all of the States will be admitted to representation aud to their former positions in the Uuiou, under tho bill reported on yesterday in tho House. [Wash. Cor. Kern York Herald. MOST DISTRESSING ACCIDENT.-A most distressing accident occurred in this District, near Jit. Pleasant, on Friday, the 2-itb ult,, resulting in the death of Mrs. Ophelia Henderson, wifo of Mr. Wade Henderson. This lady was on a visit to her father, Mr. John Davenport, and family, about a milo distant from her own home. A little brother of Mrs. H., ten or twelvo years old, was handling an old shot gun, supposed uncharged, in a room whore Mrs. H. and others of tho family were engaged in some do? mestic employment, when tho gun was suddenly discharged, taking ef? fect upon the temple of Mrs. H., and entering the brain. She was in? stantly stricken down in au uncon? scious state, and survived iu this condition twenty-four hours, when she expired. We learn that a short, time previous to this, nu effort had been ineffectually made to discharge tho gun, which led to the ingression that it was unloaded. I LaurensviUe Herald. Garrett, residing in this District, near the Greenville border, was killed by his horse, under the following circum? stances: Mr. Garrett was riding alone j in his neighborhood, when his horse becoming unruly, he dismounted to punish him. The horse immediately seized with his teeth the arm and hand of Mr. G., maugliug them in n dreadful manner. Mr. Garrett, in the struggle, manuged to entangle tho halter about a sapling in such n man? ner as to expose only one arm to tho attack of tho horse. Mr. G. holding on with the other. In this condition, he was found by a neighbor, who was nuable to rosen o him until others were brought to bis assistance.
