"No SCRATCH TICKETS."-Aa an
amusing incident connected with the
recent election, (if anything connect?
ed therewith can be regarded as
bearing au amusing phase,) we relate
the following: At ono of the polls in
this ^keouuty,"a newly-enfranchised
individual colored citizen stepped up
to deposit his ballot, and handed it
to a manager at the box, who imme?
diately opened it, .(as was the cus?
tom,)' and after having scanned it,
remarked, "No scratch tickets allowed
here." The voter, under an appre?
hension that he was violating some
ride ha had forgotten or uever heard
of,'made no objection; when the
manager in question took np a tioket
off the table and deposited it in the
box. A gentleman who was stand?
ing by, hearing the expression, "No
sorateh tickets allowed," and being
"nuder a cloud" in regard to the
meaning of the prohibition, men?
tioned to a friend near by, who seem?
ed to be in the confidence of the
managers, that he would like to look
at tho "scratch ticket," and see what
sort of thing it was. The friend
accommodated him by getting the
tioket; when, lo And behold 1 it was
ascertained that tho loyal voter had
taken the liberty of erasing the name
of a white man (nominee of the
League) and had very legibly written
on the margin of the tioket, in lieu
of the namo erased,, that of a colored
man, a member of the same party,
but not a nominee.

The Pacific Railroad hos begun its
descent on the Western slopo of the
Bocky Mountains. The event was
celebrated on the 16th instant. Tho
laborers now look down dn tho plain
where tho Mormons are congregated,
and whore they have for so many
years in their seclusion followed
peaceably their own way of life.
The Pacifio Railway will soon bless
them with prying guests, who will
give them great trouble.
. The British authorities, some time
ago, imprisoned an Irishman, a Mr.
Johnstone, iu Downpatriek jail, for
too groat zeal in proclaiming tho
woes of bib unfortunate country. He
has completed the term of his sen?
tence, but will remain in jail a month
longer, preferring to do that rather
than give bonds to keep the peaco
for sir months. His friends propose,
to compensate his Bufferings by Bond?
ing nun to 1'arliamont.
MILL BuiiNED.-Tho grist mill of
Mrs. Louisa Cunningham, near
Waterloo, was destroyed by fire on
the night of Tuesday, tho 14th inst. ;
undoubtedly tho work of an in?
cendiary. Them had been no fire
about the place during tho day.
This is the second timo this mill hus
been destroyed by fire.

The famous and nritorlons Stephen
H. Branch, committed suicide on the
13th instant, ju ono yf the prisons
of New York city, whete he was con?

The ruins of a town, enri?is, eta,
have been discovered in Utah, a few
miles above the month of Salt River.
The canals are from thirty-five to fifty
feet in width, and the walls, which
are from five to .eight feet high, have
been traced ten or fifteen miles from
thc river. The ruins aro at intervals
the length of the valley. Cotton,
tobacco, and castor beans are still
found growing luxuriantly upon the.
old farms around.
Capt. Hartstein, who rescued Doc?
tor Elane, and afterward took the
Resolute ont to H. R. M., died on
the last day of March, of paralysis,
in Paris, where he hod lived since
the outbreak of the war.
