A public meeting is to be held at Newberry Court House to-day, to take into consideration tho subject of sending North for laborers. Steps have already been taken in this im? portant matter, and it only now re? mains that the proper agents receive the names of thoso who desire labor? ers, and the number, that they may be sent for. DEATH OP Con. JOHN F. HUNTEB. This distinguished gentleman died at his residence, in Pendleton Tillage, on Sunday morning, tho 11th inst., after a short illness. He distinguish? ed himself greatly in tho war with Mexico, and for his gallant services at Cerro Gordo was presented by Congress with a fine sword. I Pickena Courier. A panther hunt came off in the streets of Mobile recently. A large animal, nearly six feet long-driven from the swamps, it is supposed, by the high water-mado his appear? ance in one of tho principal thorough? fares, and after an exciting abase, was finally killed. A rumor prevailed in Montreal, on Sunday, that tho Government was in possession of information respecting a Fenian conspiracy to assassinate tho late Minister McGee; that the conspirators, forty in number, drew lots, and the execution of tho deed fell on Whelan. An Arkansas coroner recently charged a jury that they wera to ascertain whether tho deceased came to his death by accidence, by inci? dence, or by incendiary. The jury found: Death by accidence in the shape of a Bowie-knife. The man Brown and his wife, who adopted a little girl in Dayton, Ohio, wont to five in Canaan, N. Y., in? sured her life for $5,000, and then locking up tho house, left her to be burned to death, have been found guilty, and sentenced to bo hung. Mrs. Partington has boen reading the health officer's weekly reports, and thinks that "Total" must be an awful malignant diseaso, since as many die of it as all tho rest put together. PICKENS.-Complete roturns from Pickons show that 825 votes were polled-a majority of 43 against the Constitution. Thos. A. Rogers has been elected Senator, and Wm. T. Field, Representative. The witty editor of the Louisville Journal says that tho troubled waters around the White Houso must be very shallow, as the radicals expect to get Johnson out and Wade in. 400,000 pairs of shoos are uow manufactured in Lynn in one weok. More goods woro sold in that city last month than over beforo in the same time. A negro was killed in Lumpkin County, Go., by a sentinel of tho Loyal League, who had been in? structed to shoot any ono who tried to pass. Stanton bas religious sorvices in tho War Office every Sunday. It is said that ho exhibits overy Christian virtno except resignation. A Western paper proposes John Morrissey for tho Presidency-not becauso ho is tho most fit, but be causo ho has "fit" the most. If Adam had asked Evo for a kiss, could tho lutter, without profanity, havo replied, "1 don't care, A-dam, if you do?" A man's character is frequently treated like a grate-blackened all over first, to become tho brighter afterward. Tho Midnight Mission in Now York reclaimed, last year, seventy seven fallen wom??, of whom ?urly six have permanently reformed.
