ST. LOUTS, April 23.-Blow, Cross & Co., druggists, and several adjoin? ing buildings, burned to-day; loss over a million. AUGUSTA, April 23.-The polls closed to-day. " Total for the four days 6,257. Bullock's majority is 1,000. Tho election closed in a row between the whites and blacks, in wbioh several were wounded, but none seriously. The excitement is in? tense. Subsequently a negro knocked a white lady down, ia the public streets, injuring her severely. This added to the excitement prevailing, and fears were entertained of a gene? ral riot. Several shots were fired at the freedman, but he escaped with a alight flesh wound. Tho negro was arrosted by the militory, who charged through tho streets, dispersing the crowd. After quiet was restored, it was ascertained that tho negro who assaulted the lady, was Buffering under a temporary fit of insanity. When this became known, quiet waa restored, and at this hour-IQ o'clock-the city is perfectly quiet and order reigns. WASHINGTON, April 23.-Despatch? es from Michigan state that tho De? mocrats gain seventy supervisors and defeat negro suffrage by 40,000. A Democratio recorder has been elected in Chicago by 921 majority. lu tho House, nothing dono this morning. Boutwell concluded his remarks in tho impeachment court. Nelson, of Tennessee, spoke extempore; alluded to the magnitude of the occasion; feared lack of ability to properly treat it. The managers charged Mr. Johnson with evil nature and wicked? ness; characterized him as destitute of character; accused lrim of evcry tbing from a great political criminal to a common scold, i Nelson gave the President's biography and the refutation of these charges and asper? sions. Thoso who, liku Nelson, knew tho President best, sustained the President. Nelson felt bo was not addressing Senators as politicians, but as judges, who would rise-above prejudice or party, and was confident outsido pressure would be indignant? ly repelled. If ho believed convic? tion a foregone conclusion, bumble as ho was, he would scorn to address thom. Nelson cited tho resolutions offered by Johnson, and adopted by Congress, immediately after tho Bull Run disaster, declaring tho purposes of tho war still unropenled. Congress claimed powers in thc Re? construction Acts by implication; tho President's powers wore plainly implied. The President had a right to his own opinion.
