How TO TELL, THE LENGTH OP YOUR
LIFE.-Last evening, Dr. T. S. Lam?
bert lectured before a large audience
in Steinway Hall, npon "Longevity
and Brevevity," the latter word being
n-ther unlawfully coined by him as
antithetic to the former. The doctor
maintained that the age to which any
man could arrive, even with the ut?
most care, was determined within
very n?rrow limits by that to which
his ancestors had arrived. He treated
vitality throughout as a quantitative
force. Each person inherited a cer?
tain amount, which was spent in a
certain time, and this time might be
short, although health was good and
strength great. The natural period
of life, however, could, of oourse, be
shortened by inattention to the laws
of life. He claimed, furthermore,
that there were personal indications
by which one could determine
whether he was probably long-lived
or short-lived, in the absence of
knowledge of his inheritance in that
respect, or as confirmatory of auch
knowledge. These indications he did
not consider to be as well ascertained
and defined as they might be and
would be-the science was as yet in
its infancy-but from observations in
thousands of cases he had discovered
a portion of them. Indications of
longevity were to be found in depth
of brain between tho eye-brows and
the opening of tho ear, in a long oval
face, in a largo nose, in hazel eyes,
in a long body relatively to the limbs,
in moderately drooping shoulders,
and moderately long nock; "breve?
vity," in shallowness of the brain in
the region mentioned, in limbs dis?
proportionately long to the body, in
too long or too short neck, and in a
peculiar light blue circle to bo seen
round tho pupils of some persons'
eyes. Tho audience was evidently
mach interested in the theories of the
