Our correspondent in Columbia, S.
C., writes tbnt clubs are forming in
various parts of the State, to resist
the radicalism from which so much
is feared. They do not oppose, ho
says, negro suffrage unless it is also !
ignorant, and are willing to admit j
whites and blacks alike to vote where j
both are equally well qualified. This -
ia sensible grouud to take, but with I
a curious inconsistency they refuse
to admit any blacks to membership
bf their clubs. The negroes, they
say, are opposed as a race to the
whites, and it is folly to try to aot
with them. How, then, do they ex?
pect to succeed? Tbe q^hp?e^vote
is confessed'to be in' tbe majority;'
and unless they divide it-getting, j
as it seems they eau do, the intelli?
gent blacks on their side-what pos
sible chance have they of resisting
radicalism? Practical wisdom does
not seem yet to be thc distinguishing
characteristic of Southern whites.
