The colored people of the South
(although not of the North) are
known to be uncommonly religious.
Ever since they wore enslaved by tho
British and tho Yankees, and sold to
the people of the South, they have
"gladly received tho Word," aud have
formed a large majority iu our
churches. The Republican* have
taken advantage of your piety, my
colored brethren, to deceive you.
They try to make you believe that
they freed you from slavery. How
can they say thia, when they know
that, at the beginning of the lato
war, their Congress passed a resolu?
tion declaring that Hie destruction of
slavery was not the object of the war,
but it was the preservation of the
Union. That Union filled their pock?
ets with money; and to preservo it,
they did not care a fig for you. If
the South had been willing to make
peace with them, at that time, they
never' would have freed you. Bot
when they found that they could not
whip us without help from you, they
offered you freedom; and those that
went to them, they put in the front
rank, to receive the bullets that
.would otherwise havo killed them.
. They made you a bomb-proof to
hide themselves in. I must do you
tho justice to say, that most of you
spurned their vilu and unchristian
offer, and continued, according tc
tho Scriptures, "obedient to youl
own masters." You do not owe yom
freedom to their good will, but, undei
tho Providence of God, to theil
cowardice and meanness. If there
is any human being you ought tc
thank, it is Andrew Johnson, for ht
required the oonquered States to free
you, before he would consent to theil
return to tho Union.

district, in Chnrleston. Such fellow
aro imposters. They are after tiltl
lucre, and silly women Jed captive I
their lust*. All they want in, first,
get your money or your votes, and
afterwards to lie with your wives and
daughters; nnd when they get you
into trouble with your white brethren,
they will run back to where they
came from.
The white preachers from the
North are generally persous that had
not character enough to stay there.
They have come to impose on your
good nature nuil make money out of
you. Thus far, they have succeeded
very well. Penuyless upstarts, who
had not cash to buy a second hand
coat, at homo, aro now lending
money at twenty per cent., and
getting rich.
If you possess christian wisdom,
you will not receivo these people into
your houses, nor bid them God
speed; and you will turn away from
those of your own color who are
leagued with them, especially from
tho eleven dollar's a day legislators,
who made a Constitution which is
full of iuiquity. That Constitution
allows every idler and vagabond,
white or black-men who wont pay
even the poll-tax-to vote, and thus
to make laws for honest and indus?
trious citizens. If you are diligent
in business, as the 13iblo commands,
and God prospers you so that you
can buy a piece of laud, you aro, at
once, to be taxed, to support them
in the poor-house, and to school
their childi en. This is not christian.
"Who are the whites that havo gone
over to the Republican party? Are
they not ungodly, blasphemers, per?
jurers? Did they not profess to be
good Confederates, hold office, and
skulk in bomb-proofs during tho
war? Where is tho respectable citi?
zen or christian, that has joined that
party? Are any of the white minis?
ters of tho city found there? No.
They have a deep interest in your
spiritual welfare. They have visited
your churches and preached to you.
But did they send round tho hal ?
Did they not, the rather, put their
hands into their own pockets, to en?
courage and help you?
Your old friends are your best
friends. "No man having drunk old
wine straightway desireth new; for
he snit h the old is better." li you
pin your faith to whito adventurers,
or colored men, who turn the pulpit
into a place for political harangues,
or candidates, who violate the Sab?
bath, by making electioneering
speeches on that holy day, you will
sin against God; and you will find,
in the end, that their "vino is the
vine of Sodom, and tho poison of
asps is under their tongues."
My friends and brethren, be cir?
cumspect and prayerful. Resist the
devil of Republicanism. If you value
your christian character or worldly
interest, reject and spit upon tho
wicked Constitution made in Charles?
ton, and vote with the Democrats.

A BAD THING OF WHICH THE K. K.
K. ia INNOCENT.-The Gadsden Times
say? that, on Monday last, we were
in Jacksonville, and witnessed a
sight sickening and revolting in the
extreme. After the arrest of Judge
Popo, who was so feeble from ill
health that ho could scarcely walk,
and as the guards were conducting
him to jail, au aged, grey haired
mau so afiiicted with paralyisis, that
ho had not walked for years without
the aid of crutches, too outraged to
contain himself, cried out, "Judge,
aro they taking you to jail? Well,
d-n me if I'd go with them?" For
this stosstrons ntte?auee, ? soldier
made a tilt at hita with fixed bayonet.
Tho choleric old mau bestowed a
shower of oaths on the soldier, who
turned away and left him. His
frionds now coming up, got the old
gentleman into his buggy, and start?
ed out of town with him. Lieut.
Johnson, commanding tho post, came
up about this time, ?ind orderted the
buggy stopped, and arrested him.
As he wus being conducted to jail, he
again cursed tho Lieutenant and
guard, and for this was beaten with
his own crutch until it was broken
over him.
We wish somebody would explain |

lished yesterday, is kept in jail with?
out a trial. He was imprisoned dur?
ing tho war, on charges of crimes
connected with the rebellion. The
war ended three years ago-and the
courts are sitting every day for the
trial of offences. "let, without
being tried or arraigned, this man
is still kept in prison. We used
to regard the habit of Austria to
keep Stale prisoners in the dungeons
of Spielberg for years without a trial,
