The Whippoorwill. While enjoying a comfortable chair upon thc ' piazza last night, and re? flecting upon the events of the day, our thoughts wera disturbed by the far-off strain of a whippoorwill. It was the first wo had heard this Ben? son, and its sad music awakoned a train of reflections. "While the air of spring is filled with the songs of a thou? sand warblers by uight is heard the mournful chant of tho whippoorwill. Buried deep in the groves of a Southern land, this lover of warmth and oomfort chases away tho long winter months; and when tho meri? dian sun again breaks the ice aud dissolves tho snow, when tho green grass onco moro shoots up and tho trees leaf in their usual order, away, away ho flies, and the old haunts of his birdish love know hi m once again. The bright glare of day seems to havo no charm for him; unlike other feathered songsters, he prefers to sing nt night. When all is silent, save the low chirps of the Katydid and an occasional hoot of the owl, the littlo melancholy bird of the night comes forth from his hidden nook, and soating himself upou a bough, rocked by the evening wind, he begins his plaintive chant, "Whip? poorwill/' This is soon caught up and echoed back by another of his tribe, and another will take np the straiu, and thus it is carried from throat to throat, until the forest air vibrates with the melancholy soug. Tho serenade continues long after all other winged and creeping things are asleep; and not until tho first streaks of sunlight tint the tree-tops, do they cease their night wail and retire to their hidden and leafy recesses; there they rest in security and quiet until the twilight chirp of the Katydid calls them forth again. The w'hip Eoorwill is about tko size of a robin ; as a long tail, and its color is a lightish brown; is rather a pretty bird than otherwise. It is sometimes called "Bird of the Night," from its peculiar habit of being hidden all day when other birds are out, aud coming forth at night. Many years ago, we remember visiting tho ruins of an old church? yard; tho graves were mostly flatten? ed by time, and the few grave-stones it boasted wero mouldered with age. It was just after twdight, and all was still and ?orone in that old burial place, savo a plaintive noto from a whippoorwill." Following tho di? rection of the sound, it brought us to a littlo grave, with a small stone at the hoad; it bore this simple inscrip? tion. "Oi-.r Willis." Retreating again to a little distance, and waiting for a sound from the hidden songster, were presently gratified by seeing a littlo bird, perched upon a low limb of an oak, which grow immediately at tho boy's head, open his throat and emit the slow mournful notes which had just attracted our atten? tion.
