MU. SAWYER'S SPEECH.
Why is it that our radical party
send none but men in office, who |
enjoy the luxuries which big salaries j
can purchase, to address the meetings
in Columbia and elsewhere?
No man, perhaps, can come with j
cleauer hands than Mr. Sawyer, j
whose courteous and gentlemanly
manners have gained him the respect
oven of his political enemies. But
oven Mr. Sawyer may insensibly have
his mind clouded by the receipt of
$4,000 a year! Evcu his patriotism
and lovo of country may be stimu?
lated by the fear of losing the Col
lectorship of the Internal Revenue
for tho Charleston District. No man
knows how far his love of country
may be influenced by selfish consi- !
derations. And when a man's bread
and butter depends on the advocacy
of a certain set of political opinions,
we may reasonably infer that these
opinions may be forced npou him by
those hard task-mnsters at Washing?
ton, who will permit no man to bo
rewarded with office, unless he earns
bis pay by working for the perpetua?
tion of their power.
With what a poor grace did Mr.
Sawyer tell his sable audience, on
Wednesday uight, that the Demo?
cratic party was striving to get in, ?
that thc leaders might parcel out .
among themselves the good fat offices
now enjoyed by the radicals. Such
language might do very well for the
disinterested colored Republicans,
who have to stand buck and soe these
Northern radicals gobbling up the
paying places, and leaving them out
iu tho cold, to be content with pa?
triotism for their pay.
Office, office, office, is the cry of
these imported patriots. Even the
Reverend Mr. Whittemore has come
to the conclusion that he can serve
his Lord and Master better in that
great bear garden, the Congress of
tho United States, than in preaching
the Gospel to Darlington rebels. Of
course, tho $5,000 a year salary as a
member of Congress has nothing to
do with tho reverend gentleman's
chango of occupation. He doubtless
believes there is as fine a field for the
sonorous echoes of bis powerful
voice in the Congress of tho United
States as in the swamps of the Pe
Dee. _ SENEX.
SODDEN DEATH.-Coroner Whiting
was called upon yesterday morning
to hold an inquest on the body of
Commodore George A. Prentiss, of
the United States Navy, who died ia
ibo South Carolina Railroad passen?
ger cars, on his way from Augusta to
this city. On entering the cars at An?
gosta, Commodore Prentiss appeared
in good health, and from statements
of Conductor Duffey, there was no evi?
dence of illness until the cars reached
Windsor, some thirty miles from
Augusta, where the deceased fell in a
kind of fit, and died almost imme?
diately. The'verdict of the jury was
that while traveling on tho South
Carolina Railroad, on tho night of
the 8th instant, ho died of apoplexy.
