The character of the individuals
who aspire to lead the colored peo?
ple in their position of antagonism
to the white race of the South, should
be attentively considered by them.
Who aro they? What do they
want?
There are two classes-first, the
native; second, the imported lender.
Let the colored people reflect upon
this sugg estivo fact, that none of tho
native leaders over acquired a posi?
tion of honor or pro tit, either by
brains or integrity, in the State of
South Carolina, before the war.
One would suppose that these, at
present, bold and arrogant candi?
dates for office, through your suf?
frages, had exhibited solicitude for
your education, your advancement,
your liberties in tho past. But, is
this so? Look at them. Who are
they? The contemptible son of his
Honor Judge Moses, is a very Judas.
Ho betrayed us; lie will surely be?
tray you. Once a betrayer always a
betrayer. Ho boasted that he boro
tho banner of tho banner State of
rebellion, at tho bannur point of re?
bellion, Sumter. Ho claimed, false?
ly, as I believe, but .still he claimed
when it was safe and honorable to do
eo-that ho pulled down and dis?
graced tho flag which was tho symbol
of your freedom, and unfurled tho
flag which ho tells you to-day was
thf? sign and pledge of your perpetu?
al bondage. Is this not acting a Ho,
(and actions, you know, speak louder
than words?) Hut, besides this in?
consistency, it is whispered that when
tlie s?rvice became dangerous, and
ho had "rutted" himself into a
"bomb-proof" in the conscript
service, his hands closed upon open
brilies. Ho was publicly charged
with it at your "open-air" meeting,
on Tuesday night, without con?
tradiction by him. The truth is, ho
does not caro a picayune for you.
Ho lost all interest in you when you
ceased to be .slaves and represented
money. AU that ho desires is self
aggrandizement. Ho would desert
you to-morrow, precisely as ho de?
serted us, if ho thought tho D?mo?
cratie party would win. ]Jut ho is
only a "specimen brick." Have any
of tho other native white leaders
beou distinguished in tho past for
virtue, learning or solicitude for
your education and liberty? Which
ono of thom? Do they commend
themselves to you hy any former
uncommon regard to your rcea?
Any unusual generosity or kind?
ness as masters? Ask Nancy Mann
or Diannnh Collins. Upon what,
then, do tho natives huso their ex?
pectations of your confidence und
suffrages? They ure cot entitled to
either. Depend upon it. surely
as yon trnst, so surely will you be
deceived.
Tho second class of leaders referred
to, aro the imported leaders. Miser?
able wretches in almost every in?
stance-political adventurers, unable
to attairfoffice or distinction at home,
from want of brains sometimes, but
most usually because totally devoid
of principles-they seek to deludo
?on by promises impossible to fulfill,
'ho truth is, both classes seek their
and not yow--advancement. They
want the spoils-they despise princi?
ples. You are hugging adders-cast
them off.
If you will esamiue tho Constitu?
tion lately adopted by tho Democra?
tic party, you will seo that every
reasonable right has been nccorded
to you.
Yesterday you were slaves; to-day
you aro freedmen-an immense gap!
Fill it up by education and virtue.
Qualify yourselves to excrciso with
intelligence tho duties of freedmen,
which tho Democrats will adopt.
Imitate the gentlemen of the land,
whom you huvo always known.
Throw off your ambitious and un?
principled white leaders, whom it is
impossible to respect, and become
participants iu the government of
your nativo country; and together,
milite white and native colored, by
our joint votes, education and virtue,
let us lift up tho grand old common?
wealth to her ancient dignity and
