General in the United States army.
He enters upon the duties of his office
at once.
Gen. Schofield, to-day, made new

Legislature, under tho new Constitu?

WASHINGTON, April 4.-The House
' merely met and proceeded to the
trial. The Senate met at ll, and the
question of admission to the galleries
was considered. The abolition of
the ticket system meets opposition.
Conness said the rebellion was rife
as ever in Washington, and free ad?
mission was dangerous. The ques?
tion was postponed, and tho court
then resumed. Nothing important
occurred.
LATER.-In the Senate, resolutions
were presented from tho Indiana Le?
gislature, urging a national law for
eight hours for a day's work. Im?
peachment proceedings was resumed.
Butler announced that they had clos?
ed the case, except cumulative evi?
dence. Tho defence asked an ad?
journment until Thursday, to prepare
and arrange evidence. Conness mov?
ed that the court adjourn to Wednes ?
day. Cries of "shame," and "give
them tho other day." Mr. Johnson
moved to amend by adjourning to
Thursday. Carried, when the Senate
adjourned to Monday.
