There was no collision.
MACON, GA., Mnrcb 31.-George
Ashburn, a prominent actor in radi?
cal politics, was killed in Columbus
last night, by parties unknown.
SELMA, ALA., March 31.-Judge
Pope, of the 12th Circuit Court of
Alabama, was arrested, yesterday, at
Jacksonville, I the military authori?
ties, and confined, for failnre or re?
fusal to execute the jury orders.
Judge Pope was an original, and all
the time, Union man.
WASHINGTON, March 31.-Judgo
Black, yesterday, in the Supreme
Court, desired to argue the effect of
the recent legislation on McArdle.
During the colloquy, Judge Grier
said he felt called upon to rindicate
himself from whatever of obloquy or
censure may attach to any one in
this matter; that he thought the fail?
ure to deoide the McArdle case will
be considered as a design on the part
of the court to wait for legislation to
relieve them from tho performance of
an unpleasant duty. Grier closed
with: "Pudethac opprobire did et non
poluisse'repelll." I am ashamed that
such au opprobrium should bo cast
npon the court, aud that it cannot be
refuted. There will be further pro?
ceedings to-day.
The House adopted the conference
report on the tax bill; it goes to thc
President
The Supreme Court has postponed
the argument in tho McArdle case
until next term.
Gen. Hancock issued an order to?
day, assuming command of the divi?
sion of tho Atlantic, with his head?
quarters in Washington. The divi?
sion embraces the Department of the
East of Washington and of the
Lakes.
The McArdle argument was post?
poned on motion of Carpenter, who
was not prepared.
The managers made tremendous
efforts to-day, saying should tho
point go against them, they would
feel compelled to retire and con?
sult tho House. When the deci?
sion was announced, Butler said tho
managers desired to retire for con?
sultation.
Gen. Morehead characterizes the
interviews of Stanton and Thomas as
somewhat jocular; no hostile mani?
festations. The vote in private ses?
sion, sustaining Chase, was 31 to 19.
Littlo evidence taken to-day. The
President's friends seem in excellent
spirits.
It bas transpired that the President
k changed the form of appointment of
X blanks to conform to the Tenure cf
f Office Act, after that law passed.
