A TIN-BOAT.-A large crowd con?
gregated yesterday at the Mail Line
wharf to witness tlie launohing of a
boat, built ontirely of tin. The boat
ia about fifteen feet .long, and pro?
vided with fournir compartments, and
w?en placed in the water, floated
very lightly. She carried three men
with ease, and made rapid headway,
'being propelled by a pair of sculls.
The boat cost about forty dollars,
:iud is expected to be serviceable for

A notorious burglar and desperado
by the name of Tom Porter was sjiot
and killed by a Memphis policeman,
on Sunday night. This Porter was
only nineteen years old, and had
neeu known as a thief for eight
years. He was daring and shrewd,
u?ver hesitating to escape the police,
even if ho risked his lifo in tho at?
tempt.
Tho census of Hayes City, on tho
Kansas City Branch of the Union
Pacido Railroad, shows a population
of 1,200. The first house-s were put
lip only last Septomber.
The amount proceeding from tho
sales of the captured and confiscated
cotton paid into the treasury is nearly
thirty millions.
