The House Judiciary Committee is considering the bill declaring the fourteenth article ratified. ' There is less greenbacks in the Treasury than at any timo since the war. The gold in the Treasury amounts to $100,000,000. The President has nominated E. H. Smith collector of revenue for the first district of South Carolina.. Congreaalocftl,. WASHINGTON, March 20,-In the House, a resolution was adopted, that during the sessions of the impeach? ment court tho Blouse would attend in Committee of the WttoT?. A bill to establish a mail, passenger and emigrant line' of steamers between New York and one or more European ports, was referred. The Pacific Railroad was brought up and during the discussion it was stated that $500,000 had been expended in Washington, in 1864, to secure tho passage of the bill. I Wash bu ruo claimed that at the present rate of expenditure, when the road was com? pleted the cost of passage from Oma? ha to San Francisco would be $200, and 85,000 for a oar load of freight. Without action, adjourned. In tho Senate, petitions were pre? sented from Delaware, complaining of the deprivation of political rights; referred to the Judiciary Committee, with instructions to ascertain tho genuinoss of the signature. Drako offered a new impeachment rule, that during the sessions of the court, Chase be called Mr. President and the court shall be addressed as the Senate. Drake remarked that the President's counsel studiously ad? dressed Chase as Mr. Chief Justice, and alluded to the Senate as the court. COLUMBIA, Maich 19, 1868. . Present-Aldermen Alexander, Fisher, Geiger, Hunt, McDonald, McKenzie, Radcliffe, Walter and Weam. On motion, Alderman Hunt was called to the chair. The minutes of the last regular and special meetings were read and con? firmed. A petition was presented by the officers and members of the Inde? pendent Fire Engine Company, pray? ing that Council would have the drain in front of their eugine house, either bricked or paved with stone, the same to be bridged with wood. On motion, the prayer of the peti? tioners was granted. Tho following petition was pre? sented, and received na information: To His Honor Hie Mayor and Alder? men of tl te oily of Columbia. GENTLEMEN : Your petitioners would humbly pray, that having Or? ganized themselves into a fire com? pany for the purpose of assisting in the suppression of fires; and are, to this end, taking up subscriptions among the members and the citizens generally, for the purpose of pur? chasing bose, which your petitioners believe they will accomplish. To complete our outfit, it is necessary that an engine be furnished for that purpose, and would request from your honorable body the engine not now in uso, belonging to the city; and your petitioners will ever pray, &c.
