"I can ndduco no tangible proof of the truth of my assertion, nor can I hope to obtain your belief withont such proof; still, as certainly as I am aware of the existence of my soul, just so surely do I know that we possess capacities and are endow? ed with capabilities which, if we allow them to reach their full de? velopment, will immeasurably in? crease our spiritual knowledge and abilities. So much BO, that the dis? tance supposed to extend between the material and spiritual is so much diminished, that not only are we enabled to look over tho boundaries of tho spirit world, bot actually to cross them, and assimilating our? selves to its inhabitants, become pos? sessed of its immunities!" Tho speuker was a woman of that stylo of beauty which is best express? ed by tho word glorious. Past tho spring-time of life, tho summer primo of hoi* boauty was in its highest stato of perfection. Dressed in a somewhat fantastic style, tho richness of tho antique robe of purple velvet, heavily embroidered in gold and brilliantly colored silks, which draped her queeuly form, moro than atoned f or its strangeness of shape. She lay on a low couch, fashioned so as to represent a leopard couchant, and covered with the soft, silky skin of that animal. Her long, slender, whito hands were folded on her bosom; her head, coverod with a turban of India cashmere, which, resting on her high forehead, con? cealed every vestige of her hair, ro posed ou a pillow fringed with gold; and looking at her, one was tempted to think her ono of those wonderful beings who, in tho early ages of the world, wero considered to be thc links between the visible and invisi? ble, and to hold intercourse with familiar spirits, rather than a woman of ordinary flesh and blood. The apartment in which she laj was eminently calculated to confirn this impress-on. by its singularity and arrangement, which wore indi cative of the strange, unearthly tast< of its owner. Long, low, divided into punch covered with dark green velvet, ii heavy guilt mouldings, and with i floor composed of cubes of whito nm black marble, covored hero and thor with squares of soft carpoting, it wai furnished in the Oriental style, wit) cushions and divans of rich silk. In its centre was a fountain flllei with a crimson liquid, composed c some powerful porfume mingled wit opium, which mode the air almos oppressive with its heavy sweetness and produced in all who inhaled it, feeling of strangely blended langue and intoxication. Around it was a j wreath composed of jewels of almost ! inoalonlablo value, in which appeared mystic signs, interspersed with what seemed the letters of a uame, though not in any known wi i tin g. Just in the centre of this glittering circle, lay a human skull, with a breadth of brow and magnificence of cerebral development, whieh showed that the mind whieh had once dwelt in it was one of extraordinary compass and capacity. Impelled by that horrible Bpirit which makes a mockery of its own misery, the beautiful possessor of this strangely honored object had placed in each of the sightless eyes one of those wonderfully brilliant tropical insects, whose constant move? ments and flashing scintillations pre? sented a maddening suggestion of life, while she had filled tho grinning month with roses so fresh, that tho dew-drops still glittered upon their fragrant petals. Her words hod been uttered with the calmness which attends tho ex? pression of a settled conviction, and their effect on her companion was striking. He was seated on a cushion at her side, gazing at her with eyes which seemed actually to blaze with the love which possessed him, as they j devoured each separate detail of her almost oppressive beauty.
