ingly. "Dreams always go by con?
traries, you know; a terrible dream

Stella shook her head. "I wish
that I could think so," sho said. "I
know that I am very childish, but
since that dream, my presentiments
of evil have been almost more tbau I

that I shall uever see Edward again."
She buried ber face in her hands fot
ono moment, and then raised it again,
covered with tears. "I dreampt that
.we were walking together in a wood,"
she said, speaking in a low, tremu?
lous tone-"you and your sister, and
Edward and I-and that at a turning
in the path, wo came suddenly to the
bank of a river; a willow tree bent
over the water, and close beside it a
little boat was tied. We were laugh?
ing and talking merrily, when sud?
denly I felt my blood curdling in my
veins, and know that something
unearthly was at my side. I turned
with a shudder, and saw a huge
black thing, with wings, holding a
long lance in his skeleton hand.
'A good place to make a grave,' ho
whispered. 'Look! a good place to
make a grave.' He pointed to tho
willow tree, and there I saw a grave
dug. I screamed and turned towards
Edward, but ho was not there. I
strove to Hy, but the day had sud?
denly grown dark, and I could not
find my way, nor seo nnj-tbing but
the gaunt figure at my side, aud,
with a feeliug of despair I cannot
even bear to .remember, I seemed to
swoon away. Oh, Markl I fear that
dream foretold my Edwurd's doom.
Thiuk of the perils of tho ocean and
of tho sword! I cannot rest nor
sleep. I shall die if he does not conte
soon!"
Again she wept, and I soothed her,
telling ber that death meant mar?
riage, and laughing at ber supersti?
tion, yet feeliug a strungo foreboding
at my own heart.
Tho day passed slowly by, bnt
brought no sorrow. One 1 right
morning, a ringing stop WHS heard
upon the pathway, a clear, manly
volco sounded through thc hall, and
Scella wept with joy upon her lover's
bosom. He was there, he was safe;
she bad no fear now-her dream was
forgotten in tho living vision of pre?
sent and future.
A few days more, and I had listen?
ed to tho words which inndo my

first to salute her as a bride, and I
tbunked my God that Ho only read
the anguish of my soul.
She was to leave us soon, and one
pleasant afternoon wo walked out to?

Stella leant upon her happy husband's
arm, and I followed with my sister.
I hud fallen into a reverie, from
which I was aroused by Edward
Waring's voice:
"A boat!" ?ie cried. "A boat!
Now, if wo can find the owner, wo
may have a glorious sail. Whose is
it? do any of you know?"
"It is Mr. Brown's" said my sister,
stooping to examino a name upon
the post to which it was chained.
"Ho is a friend of ours, and will
lend us the key with pleasure. Yon?
der is bis house, among tho trees, 1
will go and borrow it for you."
Away ?lin tripped, and Edward
Waring followed her. "I'll be buck in
a moment," lin said; "don't run
away with my wife while I am gone,
Mark." And he looked back, laugh?
ingly, as ho vanished through the
buslies.
He hud scarcely gone, when a low
peal of thunder broke upon our curs.
I looked up ut tho Bky-it was fast
clouding over.
"Wo are to have a storm," I said.
"Tho boat will la* of no use. I wish
they would come back."
Stella turned as I spoko, and her
face grew deadly white. "Murki
Murk!" she gasped; "cull him buck
call him back! Quickly, cousin,
quickly!"
"Are you afraid of the storm?" I
said.
She pointed to the boat and a tree
near it, in answer. "My dream I"
abe murmured. "My dream! Do
you remember it?"
As she spoke, a flash of lightning
gleamed upon the horizon, and an?
other and heavier peal of thunder
drowned her voice.
"Edward! oh, Edward! come back
-come back!" she sobbed.
But he was beyond the reach of her
sweet voice, that voice which he was
never to hoar again-no, never! for,
as she knelt beneath that willow,
praying for his safety, the lightning
flushed ngnin, and tho thunder's
awful voico was heard once more;
and when silence reigned ngnin, and
I recovered from the stunning effects
of a defeaning crash, I know not
where, which flung me prostrate on
the ground, I saw her lying, pale and
ghastly, with a black mark upon her
bosom, beneath the riven tree, where
I had last seen her, praying.
For tho first time in my lifo I
folded her in my arms. Upon those
lifeless lips I pressed passionate kisses ;
into those closed ears I poured wild
protestations of love; close, close I
pressed that seared bosom to my
own, and wildly moaned as I felt tho
soft hand growing cold and hurd as
marble.
They found me afterwards, wander?
ing in tho woods, carrying her iu my
arms, and raving like a mauiac.
They say that I was mad for weeks;
but I have lost no remembrance of
that day, nor of the horrible despair
of tho young bridegroom's face, ns
ho looked upon his sweet wife's
pulseless form. He wept; he mourn?
ed-aye, mourned sincerely-but not
as I did. Friends sympathized with
him, and knew nothing of my Bor?
row; but as years passed on, I could
see that his old buoyancy returned,
that ho was young aud glad again.
Ouo night-nh! many years ugo
wheu Stella had been dead five sum?
mers, I sat beside her grave, weep?
ing, and watched the lights gleamiug
from tho windows of a stately man?
sion near at hand-lights which
shone upon tho fair face of another

fondly, had wed another; and I, of
whose lovo sho never guessed, sat
there, in the still, star-lit summer
night, and wept upou her grave-tho
gruvo which my hand, and mino
only, still decks with flowerets not
half so puro and sweet as the fair
bud so early laid beneath tho sod.
