"FIVE SATURDAYS."-This being leap year, there aro twenty-nine days in the month of February, and con? sequently aa the 1st waa Saturduy, there will be five Saturdays in tho shortest month of the year. This hts been noted as something curious, and the inquiry made in what num? ber of years will this happen again. Th? New Orleans Picayune declares the answer easy, lt will happen again in 1806, after the lapse of twen? ty-eight years. At the next leapyear, . in 1872, there will be five Thursdays in February; in 1876, five Tuesdays in 1880, five Sundays; and so on, ? retrogression of two days in the week for ?very leap year for seven returns, until Saturday recurs again in 1806, -when there will be five Saturdays, Tho year 1000 is not a leap year. Thc years ending with even hundreds arc not leap years, unless they aro divisi ble by 400, as well as by four. 17?( and 1800 were not leap years, am 1000 will not bo. There will be om day, therefore, lost iu tho order, ir 1000, but the other recurrence wil continue through the whole of th next century, the samo as in this but every recurring duy of the weel will be shifted back one day of tin week, in consequence of the inter vention of the year 1000. The twen ty-eighth year from 1806 will hav five Fridays instead of five Satin days. There are no anomalies in th order of succession of the days c the week to the days of the monti) This is true of every day in the yen as well as of February, and of th 20th of February as of every othe day. lu the same cycles every da of the year returns to the same da of the week in every twenty-eigl years. The intercalated day of til 20th February returns only seve times, once on each second day of tl: week; every other day returns foi times to the same day of the weel but at unequal intervals, but tl whole order occurs again ut the twei ty-eighth succession. The interva are caequal, but the order is invar able, within the cycle and in the n curring cycles. The general rule this: Every day of the month r turns to the samo day of the week intervals of five, six, six and elev( years, when they all return to tl same days together. For exnmpl Sunday, tho 2d day of February, w recur on Sundays in 1874, 1880, 18' and 1806, tho order being six, si eleven, five. Tho 3d February, Mo day, will recur to Monday in 1K7 1885, 1800, 1806, tho ord?* being si eleven, five, six, and tho 4th of F bruary will not return to a Tuesdi until 1870, but the order will be 187 1884. 1890, 1806, in the same sen of eleven, five, six, six, continua repeated. It will ho seen that t days do not correspond to the EUI days of tho month as at tho beg ning, until 1896. There is no var tion in the order of astronomic pl nomena on whioh these rules calculation aro bosod. Every ap; rent perturbation is compensated some wider generalization. There is no disorder or eccentricity anywhere in tho series. SALE SLAUGHTER.-According to our latest advices from China, (Hong Kong, December 10,) "the war in the Noith between tho imperinl and rebel forces is being vigorously wng ed." To show how vigorously, wo nro told that a great buttle at Shan? tung promontory resulted in the de? feat of tho rebel army, which lost 80,000 men. But subsequently tho imperialists were defeated in their turn "in several severo engagements, with heavy loss." A loss that muy bo described an "heavy" in compari? son to that of 80,000 men, which seems not to amount to much iu China, must have been heavy in? deed. PerhnpR it is safe to put it at fives times 80,000, more or loss, or 400,000. This Chinese rebellion has been going ou for somewhat moro than eighteen years, during which it bus been estimated that from thirty to forty million lives have been sac? rificed. If it coutinues for twentv years longer-and there seems to ue no special reason why it should not, unless foreign intervention put? a atop to it-even the 500,000,000 of Chinese population will begin to bo perceptibly thinned out. Should tho Chinese persist in destroying each other on such n scale of wholesale slaughter, SH in tho recent battle at Shunt nug promontory, tho Russian Czar may be constrained, if only by motives of humanity, to step over tho "Oreat Wall" erected as a pro? tection against Tartar incursions, to overrun tho empire and sack Pekin, like Genghis Khan, in 1215.
