FIRE| MATTERS.-A chemical fire
engine is the latest invention in Bos?
ton. The apparatus is similar to the
ordinary fire engine, having two up?
right cylinders acting directly upon
an air chamber between them. Each
cylinder works in a tank by itself.
The tanks are provided with sieves at
the top-one for carbonio acid in a
dry state, aud another at the oppo?
site end for an alkaline substance.
Through these sieves the water is
poured, dissolving the substances
contained in them as it passes into
the tanks. The pump pistons are
connected with a orosB-beam, as on
the ordinary engine, so that both
cylinders not together in supplying
the air chamber, in which the union
of the two liquids produces efferves?
cence and forms the carbonio acid
gas, the presence of which is well
known, in a buming building will at
once extinguish fire, no matter how
far it has spread or how fiercely it
burns. At the trial of one of the
engines in Boston, a few days ago,
with two-inch cylinders, and a tank
capacity of one barrel, a pile of fifty
tar barrels, spread over with shavings,
was set on fire and allowed to burn
four minutes, and the fire was extin?
guished in one minute by the engine,
playing through sixty feet of hose,
ana using only ten gallons of water.
TRIUMPH OF THE TELEGRAPH-FROM
CALIFORNIA TO IRELAND AND BACK IN
TWO MINUTES.-At an early hour
this morning, the wires of the West?
ern Union Telegraph Company from
San Francisco co Pluister Cove, Cape
Breton, and the wires of the New
York, Newfoundland and London
Telegraph Company from Plaister
Cove to Heart's Content, were con?
nected, and a brisk conversation
commenced between these two con?
tinental extremes. Compliments were
then passed between San Fruucisco
and Valentia, Ireland, when the lat?
ter announced that a message was
just then being received from Lon?
don direct. This was said at 7.20 a.
m., Valentia time, February 1. At
7.21 a. m., Valentia time, the Lon?
don message was started from Valentia
for San Francisco; passed through
New York at 2.35 a. m., New York
time; was received in San Franoisco
at 11.21 p. m., San Francisco time,
January 31, and was at once acknow?
ledged--the whole precess occupying
two minutes actual time, aud thu
distance traversed about 14.000 miles.

LAMENTABLE ACCIDENT.-A child
some four years of age, youngest son
of Mr. Dudley E Hodge, of this
District, was playing with au old
pistol, a few days since, which was
supposed to be unloaded. Suddenly
tue report ui a pintoi was heard, and
the little boy was seen lying on his
face, with the blood oozing from a
ghastly wound in hie forehead, the
ballet from tho discharged pistol
having entered the brain. The child
has, thus far, survived, though his
case is considered almost hopeless.
