ST?ANCI: CHAPTER" EX ' PLAINED.-Having noticed in tho Commercial, of the 12th inst., under the above caption, a highly incredi? ble story pertaining to a person whose sex had changed, my curiosity to know what truth there might bein so strange a story, so.ci rc umst au tinily detailed by the editor of a respect? able journal, ("Brick" Pomeroy's paper,) led mo to address the post? master of the town where this re? markable freak of nature was said to have occurred, for information upon tho subject. The following response 'from tho postmistress of tue town et Brodhead, although not scientifically explaining the question of "sex" pertaining to the individual under discussion, is sufficiently suggestive to enable one to draw a tolerably cor? rect conclusion therefrom: BpoDHEAD, Wis., January 1,1868. Sm: The story you wish informa? tion about is partly true. Ellen Burnham was married as a woman. I attended her wedding porty. She lived two or three years in that rela-' tiou; then changed her clothing, lived single a year or two, then mar? ried a lady of my acquaintance. I understand they live happy together. According to this authority, Italy is in danger of dissolution, and from internal disorders rather than from foreign violence. It is not only by France or Austria, not by the Pope or by the Bourbon, that the ruin of Italy'can ever be compassed. If Italy falls, it will be by her own hand by the improvidence and infatuation, by tho blind selfishness of her lead? ing men. DEATH OP MISS CALLAHAN.-Miss Callahan, the poor girl who was first ravished by a negro and then thrown over a cliff at Frankfort, died yester? day, of her injurie?. The monster, after accomplishing the hellish deed, threw his victim over the cliff, and, on her lodging against a bush, hurled upon her a heavy stone, which bore her to the bottom of the precipice. It is not wonderful thut he has met swift retribution. [Louisville Courier, Isl. Oa Satnrday last, a mooting waa hold at Ha?firr.tov.'n, Md., to adopt measures to aid in relieving the poor of the South. Committees, consist? ing of two ladies and two gentlemen, were appointed for each election dis? trict of the Couuty, to solicit coutri butions. LAMENTABLE DESTITUTION.-On Thursday morning last, in the ooldest weather of the season, a colored woman, poor, houseless and home? less, was delivered of an infant in the publie street. As soon as her condi? tion was ascertained, she received assistance, and has been properly taken care of in the hospital. At last accounts, mother and child were doing as well as could be expected. Stevens will die in bis bed in Washington city, on the 12th of February, 1868, perfectly happy, but the negroes and white? will have a bloody fight at his burial.
