tion. Unquestionably these Conven?
tions aro stepping quito beyond their
prerogatives. They were not assem?
bled to turu State officers out, or to
turn other people in. They were
convoked to frame Constitutions.
Tho duty of reinoviug objectionable
State officers bas boen already vested
in the mUitary commanders estab?
lished by Congress at the South. If
there were no other difficulty in any
way, tho practical ono of a conflict of
authority between the military com?
mander and tho Convention would bo
fatal. If tho power of removing and
re-appointing were left to tho com?
mander, in conjunction with tho
Conven*ion, he would be very certain
not to ai. . in opinion with them.

given at tho Concordia last night,
under the auspices of the lady ma?
nagers of tho Southern Relief Asso?
ciation, were a brilliant success. Tho
representations, as might well have
been expected from the taste aud
refinement by which they wero direct?
ed, were attractive aud beautiful,
and were received by the spectators
with great applause, lt is difficult to
conceive any kind of entertainment,
more pleasing and innocent in itself
than tho ono which has just pnssed
off with such eclat. Even as a mere
amusement, such exhibitions aro
commendable, because our nature is
so constituted that tho mind must
have relaxation of some sort, and if
it is prohibited such as is harmless,
there is danger that the tendencies
thus unnaturally obstructed will
break through the barriers that arc
interposed, and seek those devious
and improper channels which are
often presented to it in vicious and
demoralizing diversions. Ever}' new
and attractive contribution to the
innocent amusement of the people is
accessory to the virtue as well as tho
happiness of man, and when it is
linked, as in the present case, with
the Christian duty of ministering to
tho impoverished and famishing, it
becomes invested with a quality
and character of no ordinary excel?
lence. We heartily congratulate tho
ladies engaged in this enterprise
upon the flattering results of their
first exhibition, and trust that tho
second sarios, which, with new tab?
leaux, will bo given on Friday even?
ing, will bo equally prosperous to
their cnii?e. They have the best
wishes of all, not only for tho happi?
ness which their success will confer
upon others, but for tho happiness to
themselves which arises from making
others happy, the highest reward
that benevolence in this liff, can over
