Rhode Island was founded by Dr.
"Wolf and other 'African slave traders,
who made immense fortunes from
the bc si ness. It was originaly known
as ' Providenoe Plantations, and was
the range of so many thieves, rob?
bers and such outlaws, that it was
named Rogue's Island, and likely
would have been thus named to this
day, had not the engraver who made
the first map of it for school pur?
poses changed it to Khode Island, for
some reason known to himself.
Baltimore last year was a port at
which a considerable number of im?
migrante landed. The total for the
year footing np 10,768, of whom
9,225 came in sailing vessels, and the
others in steamers. The greater
number of those immigrants were
farm laborers, and some brought
money with them, in sums from
$200 to $1,800.

bought for two other parties in connection
with myself-one of them need it on cotton
and corn, and thinks it answored finely;
the other put it on cotton, on very poor
ground, and thinks it doubled his crop. I
used it on corn. It answered finely, and
was thought by tho hand that cultivated
the crop to be fully equal to Rhode's Super
Phosphate. I also used it on about an
acre of cot tun, and I am clearly of opinion
that it is the best and cheapest fertilizer
in use, and I expect to order several tons,

Where the Poudrette was used, it gavo
us near half a bale more per acre, and'
caused the cotton to open much earlier;
and wo would, therefore, recommend tho
same as a concentrated maumu for the
growth of co'ton, as well a? impiovouicnt
