VESUVIUS.-The eruption of Mount
Vesuvius, which was described some
few days since as becoming still moro
intensely grand, is just now-De?
cember 9-quite alarming. The
whole of the volcauo is in violent ac?
tion, and flame issues not only from
thc old crater and many new open?
ings to the air, but it continues to
blaze after its ejection.
A slight subsidence of the volcanic
motion had taken place, and on Mon?
day, the 9th of December, the moun?
tain remained almost quiescent, its
sides being covered to a great extent
with snow. A heavy colored smoko
issued from what the savaiis term the
"smoke holes," old and new. Tues?
day night, December 10, the eruption
was resumed with great force, and a
mass of lava, resembling a solid rock,
was Bhot from the crater to a great
height, and, as seen from this oity,
rolled down the sides of the great
cone after falling. A loud roar, as if
of artillery, was heard during tbe
entire night. Tho mountain was
veiled in darkness long after the hour
.of daybreak next morning. As tho
forenoon advanced, a strong wind
sprung up from the North and dis
Eelled the gloom, and Vesuvius bas
een witnessed in its fiery daily gran?
deur since.
To-day a perfect river of fire is
seen to flow from the mountain, run?
ning in a Westerly direction. The
fiery flood is nearing the town of
C?rcala, The upheavings of the vol?
cano are attended with shocks re?
sembling those of an earthquake,
and loud detonations, as if a battery
of heavy guns in ftill play, are heard.
A perfect panic prevails among the
inhabitants of all the villages situated
in the neighborhood of the foot of
the mountain.
The Mobile Register devotes tho
"virgin use" of its now type to re?
printing the Constitution of tho
United States, and to a very glowing
and just eulogy of that great char?
ter of American liberty. AU our
troubles, it says, have been owing to
our departure from its requirements.

with myself-ono of them used it on cotton
and corn, and thinks it answered finely;
tho other put it on cotton, on very poor
ground, and thinks it doubled his crop. I
used it on corn. It answered finely, and
was thought by tho hand that cultivated
tho crop to be fully equal to Rhode's Super
Phosphate. I also used it on about an
acre of cotton, and I am clearly of opinion
that it is the best and cheapest fertilizer
in use, and I expect to order several tons

us, with tho exception of your Poudrette,
with little or no effect to tho crop.
Where the Poudrette was used, it gave
us near half a balo more por acre, and
caused thc cotton to open much earlier;
and wo would, therefore, recommend thc
eamo SB a concentrated manure for thc
growth of cotton, as well as improvement
